〜ものを (~mono o) — if only ~ (but it didn't happen)
It could have gone well, but it didn't — regret and complaint. The feeling of 'why on earth didn't you…!'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Say a friend moved heavy furniture alone and hurt his back. You say: 'If you'd just said a word, I'd have come and helped!'
- In Japanese: 「一言言ってくれれば手伝ったものを」.
- You meet it in novels, essays and in older people's speech.
Meaning
- 「〜ものを」shows a mix of regret and mild anger — the 'what a shame, why did you do that' complaint.
- The whole sentence is negative — regret over something that did NOT happen.
- Another famous phrase: 「よせばいいものを」= he should have left it alone, but he didn't.
How to attach
- Usually 「〜ば/〜たら」first, then 'the good result that could have happened' + 「ものを」
- Directly to the plain form of verbs and い-adjectives: 手伝ったものを・済んだものを
- な-adjectives take 「な」: 簡単なものを
- Very often the sentence simply ends at 「ものを。」— the rest goes unsaid.
Versus what you know
N3The meaning is exactly that of 「〜ば〜のに」(「言ってくれれば手伝ったのに」); 「ものを」just sounds older, more written and stronger, and the complaint comes through harder.
Watch out
- It is not used for a happy thing that really happened.
- You cannot follow it with your own wish or request (〜てください); what follows is only what actually happened.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
一言言ってくれれば、駅まで迎えに行ったものを。
ひとこといってくれれば、えきまでむかえにいったものを。
If you'd said just one word, I'd have come to pick you up at the station.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一言言ってくれれば = if you had said just one word (but you didn't) → 迎えに行った = I would have gone to pick you up → attach 「ものを」 = but it didn't happen — regret → the rest of the sentence is left unsaid; it ends at 「ものを。」.
よせばいいものを、弟はまた給料を全部ゲームに使ってしまった。
よせばいいものを、おとうとはまたきゅうりょうをぜんぶゲームにつかってしまった。
My little brother should have known better, but he blew his whole salary on games again.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) よす = to stop, not do → よせばいい = it would have been fine not to do it → 「ものを」 = but that's not what happened → then the bad thing that actually happened: 給料を全部ゲームに使ってしまった.
早く病院に行けば軽くて済んだものを、無理をして入院することになった。
はやくびょういんにいけばかるくてすんだものを、むりをしてにゅういんすることになった。
Had they gone to the hospital early, it would have stayed minor; instead they pushed themselves and ended up hospitalized.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 早く病院に行けば = if they had gone to the hospital early → 軽くて済んだ = it would have stayed minor → 「ものを」 = but that's not what happened → then what actually happened: 無理をして入院することになった.
