〜にもまして (~ni mo mashite) — even more than ~
'It was already ~ before, but now it's even more so' — a formal way to show something has gone up further.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You are spending your second summer in Japan. Last year was already terribly hot, but this year is even worse: 去年にもまして暑い.
- It is a little formal — common in news, speeches and writing.
Meaning
- 「〜にもまして」= 'that was already a lot, but this is even more'.
- Its 「も」adds 'that one was already high too', so it usually comes with a 'before or usual' state like 去年・以前・いつ: 以前にもまして (even more than before), いつにもまして (even more than usual).
- With a question word it means 'most of all': 何にもまして = more than anything, 誰にもまして = more than anyone.
How to attach
Directly after a noun or question word: 「にもまして」
Versus what you know
The 「より」you learned early on only makes a plain comparison — 「去年より暑い」says nothing about whether last year was hot or cool.
Watch out
What follows is a positive 'it grew even more' sentence — a negative one with 「〜なかった」(去年にもまして雨が降らなかった) does not go here; say 「去年よりさらに雨が少なかった」instead.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
今年の夏は、去年にもまして暑さが厳しい。
ことしのなつは、きょねんにもましてあつさがきびしい。
This summer's heat is even harsher than last year's.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 去年 = last year (it was hot then too) → 「にもまして」 directly = even more than that → then the stronger state: 暑さが厳しい = the heat is harsh.
新しい店長が来てから、店は以前にもまして忙しくなった。
あたらしいてんちょうがきてから、みせはいぜんにもましていそがしくなった。
Since the new store manager arrived, the shop has become even busier than before.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 以前 = before (it was busy then too) → 「にもまして」 = even more than before → then the stronger state: 忙しくなった.
日本で働く私にとって、何にもまして大切なのは家族の健康だ。
にほんではたらくわたしにとって、なににもましてたいせつなのはかぞくのけんこうだ。
For me, working in Japan, what matters more than anything is my family's health.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 何 = what (a question word) → adding 「にもまして」 gives 何にもまして = more than anything else = most of all → then: 大切なのは家族の健康だ.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「今日は連休なので、駅はいつ___混雑している。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which form attaches straight to a question word?
いつ + にもまして = even more than usual. The other forms do not exist in Japanese.
In which sentence is 「にもまして」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is what follows positive or negative?
A negative sentence does not follow にもまして. Say 「去年よりさらに雪が少なかった」.
'It was busy before too, and now it's even busier' — which sentence says this?
💡 Hint: Which form has the 「も」of 'before, too'?
以前にもまして = busy before too, even more now. 「にひきかえ」says 'the opposite before (not busy)'; the other two say 'less busy now'.
