〜たりとも〜ない (~tari tomo ~nai) — not even (one) ~
Takes the smallest unit — one day, one yen, one second — and says 'not even that', denying it completely. A stiff form.

When to use it
- On your first day at the company the manager says: 「会社のお金は一円たりとも無駄にしてはいけない」— 'you must not waste even one yen of company money.'
- It is stiff language; with a friend, 「一円も無駄にしないで」is enough.
Meaning
- Put the smallest unit (one yen, one day, one second) in front and say 'not even that', and you get a strong 'absolutely not' — that is the job of 「〜たりとも」.
- It turns up a lot in prohibitions and vows: 'must not', 'I will never'.
- For 'nobody at all' there is the old fixed phrase 「何人（なんぴと）たりとも」, seen on notice boards.
How to attach
- Straight after '一 + counter' (一日・一円・一瞬・一滴): 「たりとも」
- A negative must follow: 〜ない・〜てはいけない・〜は許されない
Versus what you know
It resembles the 「一人として来なかった」(not one person came) you learned earlier, but 「たりとも」sounds even firmer.
Watch out
- The unit is always the smallest, '一' — you cannot say 「三日たりとも」.
- It rarely goes with big units like 「一年」or 「一トン」.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 入院中の母 = my mother in the hospital → 一日 = one day (the smallest unit) → attach 「たりとも」 = not even one day → then the negative: 忘れたことがない = have never forgotten.
工場の部品は、一ミリたりともずれてはいけない。
こうじょうのぶひんは、いちミリたりともずれてはいけない。
Factory parts must not be out of place by even one millimeter.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 工場の部品 = factory parts → 一ミリ = one millimeter → 「たりとも」 = not even one millimeter → then the prohibition: ずれてはいけない = must not be out of place.
工事現場では、一瞬たりとも安全確認を怠ってはならない。
こうじげんばでは、いっしゅんたりともあんぜんかくにんをおこたってはならない。
On a construction site you must not neglect safety checks for even a moment.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 工事現場 = construction site → 一瞬 = an instant (the shortest time) → 「たりとも」 = not even for an instant → 安全確認を怠る = to neglect safety checks → 〜てはならない = must not.
