When to use it
You're showing a Japanese friend round the old temple in your village. They ask: 「このお寺にまつわる話って、何かある?」— 'is there any story connected with this temple?'
Meaning
The root meaning of 「まつわる」is 'to wind around', like a vine, so 「〜にまつわる」points to the stories, legends, superstitions, memories or troubles that wrap around a place, object or matter.
How to attach
- Attach 「にまつわる」after a noun, then a noun right after it: 話・伝説・エピソード・迷信・思い出・トラブル.
- It is almost always used to describe a noun; it doesn't end the sentence.
Versus what you know
- N3「〜に関する」is a neutral 'about' — for reports, notices and documents (ビザに関する質問).
- N2「〜をめぐる」shows disputes and debate. 「まつわる」has the flavour of stories and people's experiences.
Watch out
Key rule: it doesn't fit official documents, rules or notices (申請書・規則) — use 「に関する」there.
