〜をおして (~o oshite) — in spite of ~ (pushing through illness / opposition)

Knowing there is illness, injury or opposition, you push through and do it anyway.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N + をおして

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Tomorrow is the company's big presentation, but tonight you get a 39-degree fever. The next day even your boss is amazed: 「彼は高熱をおして、プレゼンに来てくれた」.
    • Fairly formal — common in news and formal statements.

    Meaning

「おす」means 'to push', so 「〜をおして」feels like this: N (illness, injury, opposition, bad weather) tries to block the way, and you push through it, knowing full well it's hard.

    How to attach

    Attach 「をおして」after a noun (病気・けが・痛み・反対・悪天候・無理).

    Versus what you know

    • N2「〜にもかかわらず」only says 'even so', with no sense of whose will.
    • With Lesson 7's 「〜をものともせず」the obstacle doesn't touch you and courage is praised; with 「〜をよそに」others' worry is ignored. With 「をおして」the person fully feels the obstacle, carries its weight and goes ahead on purpose.

    Watch out

Key rule: what follows is an action a person chose to do (出席した・出場した・来日した); something that just happens, like 「病気をおして熱が下がった」, can't follow.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    社長は高熱をおして、大事な会議に出席した。

    しゃちょうはこうねつをおして、だいじなかいぎにしゅっせきした。

Despite a high fever, the company president pushed through and attended the important meeting.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 高熱 = a high fever (the obstacle, N) → 「をおして」= pushing it aside → then what the president did by choice: 会議に出席した = attended the meeting.

    家族の反対をおして、彼女は一人で日本へ来た。

    かぞくのはんたいをおして、かのじょはひとりでにほんへきた。

Pushing past her family's opposition, she came to Japan on her own.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 家族の反対 = her family's opposition (the obstacle, N) → 「をおして」= knowing about it, yet pushing past it → then her own decision: 一人で日本へ来た = came to Japan alone.

    その選手は足のけがをおして、最後まで試合に出場した。

    そのせんしゅはあしのけがをおして、さいごまでしあいにしゅつじょうした。

Despite a leg injury, that player pushed on and played to the end.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 足のけが = a leg injury (the obstacle, N) → 「をおして」 → then what the player chose to do anyway: 最後まで試合に出場した = played to the end (news style).

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「彼は腰の痛み__おして、引っ越しを手伝ってくれた。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: You 'push' the obstacle — the object particle.
