〜と相まって (~to aimatte) — combined with ~ (the effect grows)
A formal, written form: two factors come together and make the result even bigger.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On the news you hear: 「ビザの緩和が円安と相まって、観光客が過去最多となった」— visas got easier, the yen got cheaper on top of that, and the two together pushed tourist numbers to a record.
- It is formal, written style — news, reports, ads; not chat with friends.
Meaning
That is the feeling of 「〜と相まって」: two causes or qualities blend and make the effect stronger — one plus one becomes more than two.
How to attach
- Attach it straight after a noun: 「と相まって」.
- To say 'this was added too' without naming the other factor, 「Nも相まって」is also very common (好天も相まって).
Versus what you know
N3「〜とともに」just places two things side by side ('together with'); 「相まって」says they mixed and boosted the effect.
Watch out
What follows is a result or a state — good (人気が高まった) or bad (被害が広がった) — but never a wish or a request like 'let's go' or 'please do'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
ビザの緩和が円安と相まって、外国人観光客は過去最多となった。
ビザのかんわがえんやすとあいまって、がいこくじんかんこうきゃくはかこさいたとなった。
Easier visas, combined with the weak yen, brought foreign tourists to a record high.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ビザの緩和 = visas getting easier (first cause) → 円安 = the weak yen (second cause, N) → 「と相まって」= the two combining → then the result, grown even bigger: 過去最多 = the most ever.
彼のまじめさは明るい性格と相まって、職場で高く評価されている。
かれのまじめさはあかるいせいかくとあいまって、しょくばでたかくひょうかされている。
His seriousness, combined with his cheerful nature, is highly valued at work.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) まじめさ = seriousness (first quality) → 明るい性格 = cheerful nature (second quality, N) → 「と相まって」= the two together → then the good result: 高く評価されている = is highly valued.
好天も相まって、週末の観光地は多くの人でにぎわった。
こうてんもあいまって、しゅうまつのかんこうちはおおくのひとでにぎわった。
With fine weather adding to it, the tourist spots were crowded on the weekend.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 好天 = fine weather (N) → 「も相まって」= this adding to it as well (the other cause — the weekend — isn't stated as a cause) → then the result: 多くの人でにぎわった = was packed with people.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「使いやすさ__相まって、この商品はよく売れている。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'Combined with ~' — which particle?
N + と相まって. 使いやすさと相まって = combined with being easy to use. 「相まって」doesn't take the other particles.
In which sentence is 「相まって」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does a result follow, or an invitation?
After 「相まって」comes a stronger result or state, never a wish or invitation like 「行こう」. Good results (合格) and bad ones (落ち込んだ) are both fine.
Which is closest in meaning to 「AとBが相まって」?
💡 Hint: What happens when the two mix?
相まって = two factors join and the effect gets stronger. Not just side by side like 「とともに」— the effect grows.
