When to use it
- An email from a company: 「書類審査と面接を経て、採用が決定しました」— you passed the document check and the interview, and now the job is confirmed.
- Formal style — emails, news and official announcements.
Meaning
「経る」means 'to pass through', so 「〜を経て」shows the road in between: a period of time (五年の歳月), a process or stage (審査・研修・話し合い), or a place (香港を経て) you pass through to reach the next state.
How to attach
- Attach 「を経て」only after a noun — a verb can't go straight in.
- Before a noun it is 「〜を経た N」(審査を経た商品).
Versus what you know
- N2「〜た末に」stresses the final outcome after long struggle and doubt (悩んだ末に); 「を経て」is neutral — 'this stage was passed, then this happened', hard or not.
- N3Nor is it the everyday N3 'after' 「〜てから」; it shows a path that had to be passed through.
Watch out
Key rule: N must be a meaningful period, process or stage; a small daily thing like 「昼ご飯を経て」doesn't fit.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 書類審査と面接 = document screening and an interview (stages, N) → 「を経て」= going through them → then the new situation reached: 採用が決まった = the job was confirmed.
三年間の技能実習を経て、彼は特定技能の資格を取った。
さんねんかんのぎのうじっしゅうをへて、かれはとくていぎのうのしかくをとった。
After three years of technical intern training, he obtained Specified Skilled Worker status.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 三年間の技能実習 = three years of training (a period/stage, N) → 「を経て」 → then the next stage: 特定技能の資格を取った = obtained Specified Skilled Worker status.
五年の歳月を経て、駅前の再開発がようやく完成した。
ごねんのさいげつをへて、えきまえのさいかいはつがようやくかんせいした。
After five long years, the redevelopment in front of the station was finally completed.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 五年の歳月 = five years of time (N) → 「を経て」= after it passed → then the result: ようやく完成した = was finally completed (news style).

N + を経て. 審査を経て = after going through the screening. 「を」because it is the object of 「経る」(pass through).
In which sentence is 「を経て」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A meaningful stage, or a small daily thing?
を経て = after passing a meaningful period, process or place. Lunch isn't such a stage — say 「昼ご飯のあとで」.
「さんざん悩んだ＿＿、帰国することに決めた。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A verb (Vた) comes before it, not a noun.
悩んだ末に = after much agonising, in the end. を経て only follows a noun (審査を経て); をひかえて and に先駆けて likewise follow only nouns.
