〜ぶり (~buri) — the way / manner of ~
How someone works, talks or eats — the manner you can see.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A new Nepali colleague at the factory is always first in each morning and works fast and tidily. A week later the boss says 「彼の仕事ぶりには感心するね」— 'I'm impressed by the way he works.'
Meaning
「〜ぶり」describes how someone does something — the manner or state you can see from outside — and an evaluation usually follows: に感心する・に驚く・を見習う.
How to attach
- Attach it as N + ぶり (仕事ぶり・生活ぶり・活躍ぶり), or drop 「ます」from a verb's ます-form + ぶり (話しぶり・慌てぶり).
- In speech you also hear 「〜っぷり」— 食べっぷり・飲みっぷり — usually praising someone for doing it heartily.
Versus what you know
- N3Don't mix it up with the 「3年ぶりに」(for the first time in three years) — there a length of time comes before ぶり; here an activity does.
- N2「ぶる」(putting on an act) is something else again.
Watch out
The key rule: it is only for the way a person acts; it doesn't fit weather or objects (✗天気ぶり), and it never attaches to the dictionary form (✗食べるぶり).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
新人のラムさんの仕事ぶりには、店長も感心している。
しんじんのラムさんのしごとぶりには、てんちょうもかんしんしている。
Even the store manager is impressed by the way the new guy, Ram, works.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 仕事 = work → we attach 「ぶり」: 仕事ぶり = the way someone works → 「には」 → then the judgment: 感心している (is impressed).
部長の話しぶりからすると、今年の昇給は難しそうだ。
ぶちょうのはなしぶりからすると、ことしのしょうきゅうはむずかしそうだ。
Judging from the way the manager talks, a raise this year looks unlikely.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 話す = to speak → ます-form 話します → we drop 「ます」: 話し → 「ぶり」: 話しぶり = the way someone talks → 「からすると」= judging from that → 昇給は難しそう.
彼の食べっぷりを見ていると、こっちまでお腹がすいてくる。
かれのたべっぷりをみていると、こっちまでおなかがすいてくる。
Watching him eat so heartily makes me hungry too.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 食べる → 食べます → we drop 「ます」: 食べ → casual 「っぷり」: 食べっぷり = the way someone eats heartily (praise) → 「を見ていると」 → こっちまで = I get hungry too.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「社長の__では、来年は新しい工場を建てるようだ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which verb form does ぶり attach to?
ます-stem + ぶり. 話します → 話しぶり = the way he talks. It doesn't attach to the dictionary or た-form; 「ぶる」means putting on an act.
In which sentence is 「ぶり」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Whose manner is ぶり about — a person's or nature's?
ぶり is only for the way a person does something. Weather is not a person's action, so 「天気ぶり」doesn't work — just say 「今日の天気は最高だ」.
In which sentence does 「ぶり」mean 'manner', not 'after (a time)'?
💡 Hint: Is there a length of time or an activity before ぶり?
働きぶり = the way he works (働きます → 働き + ぶり). 3年ぶり・久しぶり・10年ぶり have a length of time before them — the N3 meaning 'for the first time in that long'.
