〜形となった (~katachi to natta) — it ended up as ~ / the outcome took the form of ~
The closing line of news analysis — describing, from the outside, what overall picture the outcome made.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
News of long negotiations, elections or disputes often ends like this: 「結局、会社側が組合の要求を一部受け入れる形となった」— 'in the end, it took the form of the company partly accepting the union's demands.'
Meaning
「形」= shape, form. So this form doesn't say who decided what; once everything is over, it describes from above what the picture of the outcome looks like — often a compromise, or an unexpected or ironic result.
How to attach
- Attach 「形となった」straight after a verb's plain form, and after a noun with 「の」or 「という」(延期という形となった).
- You'll also hear 「〜形で終わった」and 「〜形だ」, and in office speech 「〜という形になります」is used to soften things.
Versus what you know
N3「〜ことになった」(来月転勤することになった) says 'it was decided' and works for personal matters too; 「形となった」instead shows the structure of the outcome objectively, through a reporter's eyes.
Watch out
The key rule: it is the picture of a result that has happened — your own wish or plan, such as 「〜たい」, doesn't go in front of it.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
住民の反対が強く、ごみ処理場の建設計画は白紙に戻る形となった。
じゅうみんのはんたいがつよく、ごみしょりじょうのけんせつけいかくははくしにもどるかたちとなった。
With strong opposition from residents, the plan to build a waste plant ended up being scrapped.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 住民の反対が強く = because residents' opposition was strong → 計画は白紙に戻る = the plan goes back to a blank sheet (is scrapped) → 「形となった」= in the end, that's how it was settled.
今回の値上げで、利用者の負担が実質的に二倍になる形となった。
こんかいのねあげで、りようしゃのふたんがじっしつてきににばいになるかたちとなった。
With this price rise, the burden on users has in effect ended up doubling.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今回の値上げで = with this price rise → 負担が実質的に二倍になる = the burden in effect doubles → 「形となった」= looking at the whole picture, this is how the result turned out.
新しい制度の開始は、一年延期という形となった。
あたらしいせいどのかいしは、いちねんえんきというかたちとなった。
The start of the new system ended up being postponed by a year.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一年延期 = a one-year postponement (a noun) → it's a noun, so 「という」 → 「形となった」= it was settled as a one-year postponement.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「両社の話し合いは、合併を当面見送る__となった。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The word for the 'shape' of the outcome.
見送る形となった = it ended up with the merger shelved for now. 「わけ」「はず」「ため」can't be followed by 「となった」.
In which sentence is 「形となった」unnatural?
💡 Hint: The picture of an outcome, or your own wish?
「形となった」is the picture of an outcome; 「働きたい」is a personal wish, so it doesn't fit. Say 「日本で働きたいと思っている」.
What is the difference between 「〜形となった」and 「〜ことになった」?
💡 Hint: An outcome seen through a reporter's eyes.
「形となった」describes the structure of an outcome objectively (news analysis). 「ことになった」says 'it was decided' and also works for personal matters.
