〜ではなかろうか (~de wa nakarō ka) — might it not be that ~? (soft claim, written)
How a writer puts their own view softly, as if asking — the key to finding the main point in N1 reading.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
In a newspaper editorial or the last paragraph of a long JLPT reading text you find a sentence like 「今こそ働き方を見直すべき時ではなかろうか」— 'might it not be time to rethink the way we work?'
Meaning
- It is not a real question — the writer is stating their opinion, but instead of hammering 'I think this!', they soften it into a question to bring the reader along.
- 「なかろう」is the old, written form of 「ないだろう」, so 「〜ではなかろうか」sounds stiffer and more bookish.
How to attach
After a noun or な-adjective, add 「ではなかろうか」directly (運用ではなかろうか); after a verb or い-adjective, put 「の」in between: 「のではなかろうか」(重くなるのではなかろうか).
Versus what you know
N3The meaning is exactly that of the 「〜のではないだろうか」and the N2 「〜ではあるまいか」.
Watch out
- The key rule: this is the language of writing and speeches — ask a friend 「駅はこっちではなかろうか?」and it sounds odd; in speech say 「〜じゃないかな」.
- It also asks for no answer, and it goes with your own opinion or guess, never with a certain fact.
Also
A reading tip: when this sentence appears, it is usually the writer's main claim.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
外国人が働きやすい職場は、日本人にとっても働きやすいのではなかろうか。
がいこくじんがはたらきやすいしょくばは、にほんじんにとってもはたらきやすいのではなかろうか。
Might not a workplace that is easy for foreigners to work in be easy for Japanese people too?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 外国人が働きやすい職場 = a workplace easy for foreigners to work in → 日本人にとっても = for Japanese people too → 働きやすい (い-adj) → 「の」 in between → 「ではなかろうか」= it's probably easy too, isn't it? (the writer's soft claim).
問題は制度そのものではなく、その運用ではなかろうか。
もんだいはせいどそのものではなく、そのうんようではなかろうか。
Might the problem lie not in the system itself but in how it is run?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 問題は = the problem → 制度そのものではなく = is not the system itself → その運用 = how it's run (N) → it's a noun, so attach 「ではなかろうか」 directly = isn't that it? (the writer's main claim).
このままでは、若い世代の負担がますます重くなるのではなかろうか。
このままでは、わかいせだいのふたんがますますおもくなるのではなかろうか。
If things go on like this, won't the burden on the young generation grow ever heavier?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) このままでは = if it stays like this → 若い世代の負担 = the burden on the young generation → ますます重くなる = grows heavier and heavier (a verb) → add 「の」, then 「ではなかろうか」 = isn't that likely to happen?
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「少子化の背景には、若者の経済的な不安がある__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「ある」is a verb — what goes in between?
After a verb add 「の」: あるのではなかろうか. Plain 「ではなかろうか」goes only after a noun or な-adjective.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Writing, or chat with a friend?
ではなかろうか belongs to writing and speeches. With a friend, say 「こっちじゃないかな?」.
Which is closest in meaning to 「〜のではなかろうか」?
💡 Hint: なかろう = ないだろう.
なかろう is the old written form of 「ないだろう」, so 〜のではなかろうか = 〜のではないだろうか (a soft claim). はずがない flatly denies: 'it can't be.'
