〜なり〜なり (~nari ~nari) — either ~ or ~ (whichever — just do something)
Name two ways and say 'either is fine — but do something.'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Your friend is job-hunting but just sits in his room worrying.
- You say: 「ハローワークに行くなり、先輩に相談するなりしたら?」— go to Hello Work or ask a senior, whichever, but do something!
Meaning
- 「〜なり〜なり」= give two examples and advise 'any of these is fine, or anything like them.'
- It gives a free choice and nudges the listener to act.
- What follows is advice, a request or your own intention (〜てください・〜たらどう?・〜つもりだ).
How to attach
- Directly after a noun: 電話なりメールなり
- Keep a particle if needed: 先生になり先輩になり
- Verb dictionary form + なり, closing with 「する」: 調べるなり聞くなりしてください
Versus what you know
N4「〜たり〜たり」only lists things you do ('I do this, I do that'); 「なり〜なり」gives a free choice.
Watch out
- It cannot report something already done — 「昨日は掃除するなり洗濯するなりした」is wrong; that is 「たり〜たり」territory.
- A single 「Vるなり」(会うなり) means 'as soon as' — only the doubled form means 'either… or…'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
遅れる場合は、電話なりメールなりで連絡してください。
おくれるばあいは、でんわなりメールなりでれんらくしてください。
If you're going to be late, please let us know by phone, email or some other way.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 電話 = phone, メール = email → 「なり」 after both: 電話なりメールなり → 「で」 = by that means → then the request: 連絡してください.

もう着ない服は、フリマアプリで売るなり後輩にあげるなりするつもりだ。

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「わからない時は、先生に_友達に聞くなりしてください。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which verb form takes 「なり」?
Dictionary form + なり: 聞くなり〜聞くなりする. Not the た, ます or て form.
In which sentence is 「なり〜なり」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Advice/wish after it, or something already done?
なり〜なり is followed only by advice, a request or a wish; a past report like 'I did yesterday' does not fit.
Reporting what you already did — which sentence is right?
💡 Hint: Think of the familiar N4 form.
A list of things done = 〜たり〜たりした. なり〜なり is advice ('do either'), not a report of the past.
