Two possibilities, and neither one is said or can be told apart — always followed by 言えない・言わない・つかない.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You worked hard on a new proposal and handed it in. Your manager read it, nodded, but said nothing:
- 「いいとも悪いとも言わなかった」— neither good nor bad.
Meaning
- 「〜とも〜とも」sets out two possibilities and says 'which one cannot be stated or told apart' — it sounds a little written and calm.
- 「〜とも〜ともつかない」describes something in between — 'like crying, but also like smiling' — that fits neither box.
- A fun fixed phrase: 「うんともすんとも言わない」= not a single word in reply.
How to attach
- Noun, な-adjective (no な), い-adjective or plain verb + 「とも」, twice: 本物とも偽物とも・行くとも行かないとも
- Always followed by a negative verb of saying or telling: 言えない・言わない・つかない・判断できない
Versus what you know
N3「本当か嘘かわからない」just says 'I don't know'; 「とも〜とも」stresses 'it cannot be decided and said' or 'nobody said it clearly'.
Watch out
A positive verb (× いいとも悪いとも思った) cannot follow.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
部長は私の企画について、いいとも悪いとも言わなかった。
ぶちょうはわたしのきかくについて、いいともわるいともいわなかった。
My manager didn't say whether my proposal was good or bad.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いい = good +「とも」 → 悪い = bad +「とも」 → then a negative: 言わなかった → 'didn't say either one'.
妹は泣き顔とも笑顔ともつかない顔で、出国ゲートへ入っていった。
いもうとはなきがおともえがおともつかないかおで、しゅっこくゲートへはいっていった。
My sister went through the departure gate with a face that was neither quite crying nor quite smiling.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 泣き顔 = crying face +「とも」 → 笑顔 = smiling face +「とも」 → 「つかない」 = can't tell which one it is → 顔で = with such a face → 入っていった.
その情報が本当とも嘘とも、今の段階では判断できない。
そのじょうほうがほんとうともうそとも、いまのだんかいでははんだんできない。
At this stage, we can't judge whether that information is true or false.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 本当 = true +「とも」 → 嘘 = false +「とも」 → in between, 今の段階では (at this stage) → then a negative: 判断できない (can't judge).
