〜てこそ (~te koso) — only by ~ing / only once ~
'Only by doing this, and only then' — 「使ってこそ上手になる」(only by using it do you get good).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
A senpai tells you 「自分でやってみてこそ、仕事が身につく」(only by doing it yourself do you really learn the job).
Meaning
- 「こそ」stresses 'this one, nothing else': 「〜てこそ」= 'without this it doesn't happen; do this, and only then'.
- A good, meaningful result follows: 効果がある・意味がある・わかる.
How to attach
Versus what you know
- N3It matches 「〜てはじめて」exactly (親になってこそ = 親になってはじめて), but 「こそ」gives the condition extra weight.
- The look-alike 「〜ばこそ」means 'precisely because' — it has its own page.
Watch out
Never a negative result after it (上手にならない).
Only by using Japanese every day do you really get good at it.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 使う = to use → て-form: 使って → we attach 「こそ」 (only by doing it) → then the good result: 上手になる.
Only once you become a parent do you understand a parent's hardship.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 親になる = to become a parent → て-form: 親になって → 「こそ」 = 〜てはじめて → then what you finally understand: わかる.
Only by doing it yourself do you really learn the job.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) やってみる = to try doing → て-form: やってみて → 「こそ」 (only by doing it) → then the good result: 身につく (you really learn it).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The 'only by doing' that attaches straight after the て-form.
Vて + こそ: 働いてこそ = only by working (do you understand). ばこそ, からには and ものの do not attach to the て-form.
— what does it mean?
💡 Hint:
てこそ = only by doing, only then — people grow only after experiencing failure.
In which sentence is 「てこそ」unnatural?
💡 Hint: What kind of result follows 「
「てこそ」leads to a good, meaningful result; 「上手にならない」is negative, so it is wrong.
