'Do that even once, and…' — disaster always follows.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
If your manager is strict you will know this sentence: 「5分でも遅刻しようものなら、大声で怒られる」(be even five minutes late and you get shouted at).
Meaning
- 「〜(よ)うものなら」= 'do just that much, and something terrible happens'.
- It carries fear and exaggeration — 'even once, even a little' — so it usually comes with 「ちょっとでも」「一口でも」「一瞬でも」.
- What follows is always a prediction that 'something bad will surely happen' — 〜だろう・〜ぞ・〜てしまう・怒られる.
How to attach
The volitional 〜よう/〜おう (食べよう・飲もう・見よう) + ものなら
Versus what you know
- N4「遅刻したら怒られる」is a plain statement; 「(よ)うものなら」adds fear and exaggeration.
- The previous 「〜ものなら」: potential form + ものなら = a wish (帰れるものなら帰りたい); this one: the 〜よう form + ものなら = disaster (帰ろうものならクビになる).
Watch out
Never a good result (合格できる) or your own wish (〜たい) after it.
