〜かねる (~kaneru) — cannot (a polite refusal)
The polite way to tell a customer 'I can't' in offices, hotels and call centres — わかりかねます (I'm not in a position to say).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- At work a customer asks something you don't know, or that your position doesn't let you answer — what do you say?
- In Japanese offices, hotels and call centres you hear 「〜かねる」: 「申し訳ありませんが、私にはわかりかねます」(I'm sorry, that is not something I can answer).
Meaning
- 「〜かねる」= 'given this situation, these conditions or my position, I cannot' — a polite refusal.
- It is the soft, formal way to say 'I can't' to customers and superiors.
How to attach
- ます-stem + かねる: わかりかねます・お答えしかねます・賛成しかねます
- Set phrase 「見かねて」= couldn't bear to just watch (so stepped in).
Versus what you know
- N4「わかりません」「できません」sound direct and a bit blunt.
- N3「わけにはいかない」is 'can't, for social reasons', and works with friends too.
- N3「〜がたい」is 'emotionally hard to' (信じがたい); かねる is a formal 'I can't'.
- Its twin 「〜かねない」looks like the negative, but means something completely different: 'something bad could well happen'.
Watch out
It never means 'I lack the skill' — 「泳ぎかねる」✗, that is 「泳げない」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
申し訳ありませんが、その件は私ではお答えしかねます。
もうしわけありませんが、そのけんはわたしではおこたえしかねます。
I'm sorry, but I'm not in a position to answer questions on that matter.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お答えします = to answer (polite) → drop ます: お答えし → we attach 「かねます」 → a polite refusal meaning "my position doesn't allow me to answer" → 申し訳ありませんが in front makes it even softer.
申し訳ございませんが、返品はお受けいたしかねます。
もうしわけございませんが、へんぴんはおうけいたしかねます。
I'm sorry, but we are unable to accept returns.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お受けいたします = to accept (very polite) → drop ます: お受けいたし → we attach 「かねます」 → the shop's polite refusal: "we can't take returns" → 申し訳ございませんが in front makes it even softer.
後輩が一人で困っているのを見かねて、手伝ってあげた。
こうはいがひとりでこまっているのをみかねて、てつだってあげた。
I couldn't bear to watch my junior struggling alone, so I helped.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 見ます = to look → drop ます: 見 → we attach 「かねて」 (the set form 見かねる = can't bear to keep watching) → the て links the reason → then the result: 手伝ってあげた.

「そのようなご依頼は、_。」— polite refusal to a customer. Fill the blank.
💡 Hint: ます-stem + かねる; you want 'can't', not 'might well'.
お引き受けし + かねます = I cannot accept (politely). かねません would flip it to 'might well'.
Which sentence is wrong?
💡 Hint: かねる is never about ability.

To a customer: 「その件は、私ではわかりかねます。」— what does it mean?
💡 Hint: かねる = a polite 'I can't'.
