〜ないものか (~nai mono ka) — isn't there some way to ~? (wish)
'If only there were some way' — the voice of a heart that knows it is hard but still hopes.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- The rent is too high, the phone is broken, the visa papers have taken months — at such moments Japanese people mutter to themselves 「どうにかならないものか」(isn't there some way?).
- It is usually said to yourself, and is a slightly written, formal (硬) form.
Meaning
「〜ないものか」= the wish 'I know this is hard, but if only there were a way'.
How to attach
- ない-form + 「ものか」or 「ものだろうか」
- Talking to yourself: 「ものかな」
- 「どうにか・なんとか・もう少し」often come before: 「なんとか直らないものか」「もう少し安くならないものか」
Versus what you know
- N4「〜たい」only says 'I want to'.
- N3「〜たらいいのになあ」daydreams; 「〜ないものか」carries the feeling of still searching for a way despite the difficulty.
Watch out
- Use only the potential form (買えない・できない) or verbs beyond your own will (治る・直る・なる・いる).
- Not verbs you decide yourself like 「行かないものか」「食べないものか」— there, make it 「行けないものか」.
