〜(よ)うではないか (~(y)ō de wa nai ka) — let us ~ (formal exhortation)

The speech-making ましょう — rallying a crowd with 'come, let us do it together!'

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb V(よ)う + ではないか/じゃないか
    Verb V(よ)う + ではありませんか

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • When the 社長 speaks at the annual meeting, a politician campaigns, or the chair of the Nepali society addresses a hall: 「みんなで力を合わせて、この問題を解決しようではないか」(come, let us all join forces and solve this problem!).
    • It is the language of speeches that rally a crowd — a stiff, masculine way of urging.

    Meaning

    • 「〜(よ)うではないか」= the meaning of 「〜しましょう」, but with a raised fist — aimed at many people at once.
    • Another use: aimed not at others but at yourself, a strong resolve 'then I will do it!' — 「だれもやらないなら、ぼくがやってみようじゃないか」.

    How to attach

    • The 「〜(よ)う」form (行こう・食べよう・しよう) + 「ではないか」
    • In speech: 「じゃないか」
    • For extra politeness: 「ではありませんか」

    Versus what you know

N4「〜ましょう」and 「〜(よ)う」(行こう・食べよう) are the everyday 'let's go, let's eat' you say to friends and family.

    Watch out

It is hardly used in daily conversation — say 「ラーメン食べようじゃないか」to a friend and it sounds like a line from a play; plain 「食べよう」is right there.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    今年こそ、みんなで売り上げを伸ばそうではありませんか。

    ことしこそ、みんなでうりあげをのばそうではありませんか。

This year, let us all raise our sales together!

    地域の人と協力して、祭りを成功させようではないか。

    ちいきのひとときょうりょくして、まつりをせいこうさせようではないか。

Let us work with the local people and make this festival a success.

    だれも行かないなら、私が店長に話してみようじゃないか。

    だれもいかないなら、わたしがてんちょうにはなしてみようじゃないか。

If nobody else will go, then I will go and talk to the manager myself.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 話してみる = to try talking → the 「〜(よ)う」 form: 話してみよう → spoken 「じゃないか」 → here it's not to others, but a strong resolve to yourself: "I'll do it!".
