    〜ないことはない (~nai koto wa nai) — it's not impossible

Neither a no nor a yes — the gentle middle answer.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vない + ことはない
    い-adj い-adj [い] + くない + ことはない
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + ではない + ことはない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

It is a very useful way to avoid a flat refusal in Japanese.

    Meaning

    • When you cannot simply say no, but cannot enthusiastically say yes either, use 「〜ないことはない」: 「頑張れば、N3に受からないことはない」= if you work at it, passing N3 is not impossible.
    • Two negatives make it positive, but a lukewarm positive — the feeling is "it's hard, but not out of reach".

    How to attach

「〜ないこともない」is heard with the same meaning.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    頑張れば、N3に受からないことはない。

    がんばれば、N3にうからないことはない。

If you work at it, passing N3 isn't impossible.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 受かる (to pass) → ない-form 受からない → add ことはない → the two negatives together make a soft positive: "it's not that you can't".

    辛い物も食べないことはないが、あまり好きじゃない。

    つらいものもたべないことはないが、あまりすきじゃない。

It's not that I don't eat spicy food, but I don't much like it.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 食べる → ない-form 食べない → add ことはない → then が brings in "but", and the real feeling comes out.

    この漢字、読めないことはないです。

    このかんじ、よめないことはないです。

It's not that I can't read this kanji.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 読める (can read) → ない-form 読めない → add ことはない → a soft answer: "it's not that I can't".

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「行き_ことはないが、時間がない。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: Build "it's not that I don't want to go".
