V dictionary form / V た-form / N の + とおりに (V-ru / V-ta / N no + toori ni) — Do it the way ~
The pattern for doing something exactly the way it was said or shown.

「〜とおりに」means "the way ~ / according to ~" — you do the second action exactly the way the first part shows or says. There are three ways to attach it: the dictionary form (辞書形) of a verb + とおりに, the た form of a verb + とおりに, and a noun + の + とおりに. The difference between the dictionary form and the た form is timing: the dictionary form is the way it is being said or shown right now (私が 言う とおりに = I will say it as we go, you do just that). The た form is the way it was already said or already learned (習った とおりに = the way you learned it). A noun needs の in between — 線の とおりに. You hear this a lot at work when instructions are given and followed.

watashi ga iu toori ni, kaite kudasai.
Please write it the way I say.
先週 習った とおりに、機械を 使って ください。
senshuu naratta toori ni, kikai o tsukatte kudasai.
Please use the machine the way you learned last week.
線の とおりに 切って ください。
sen no toori ni kitte kudasai.
Please cut along the line.
