〜(よ)うと〜まいと (~(y)ō to ~mai to) — whether ~ or not (it makes no difference)

Put the 'yes' and the 'no' side by side — either way, the outcome is the same.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    V意向形 + と + V辞書形 + まい + と、…

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • On a typhoon day the convenience store manager says: 「客が来ようと来るまいと、店は開けておく」— whether customers come or not, we keep the shop open.
    • This too has a stiff, written flavour.

    Meaning

    • 「〜(よ)うと〜まいと」= 'do it or don't — the outcome is the same either way'.
    • After it comes a firm decision or something that won't change: 変わらない・関係ない・〜つもりだ.

    How to attach

    • The same verb twice: first volitional form + 「と」, then dictionary form + 「まい」+ 「と」: 降ろうと降るまいと
    • Group-2 verbs can also take the ない-stem + まい: いようといまいと
    • する takes either 「するまい」or 「しまい」
    • 「〜(よ)うが〜まいが」works with exactly the same meaning.

    Versus what you know

    • The previous point's 「ようと」took just one condition; here the 'yes' and the 'no' sit side by side.
    • N2「〜(よ)うか〜まいか」is a mind stuck deciding 'should I go or not' (迷う・悩む follows); 「ようと〜まいと」is the conclusion 'it makes no difference'.

    Watch out

Two different verbs are not allowed — always the same verb.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    客が来ようと来るまいと、閉店時間までは店を開けておく。

    きゃくがこようとくるまいと、へいてんじかんまではみせをあけておく。

Whether customers come or not, we keep the shop open until closing time.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 来る = to come → 意向形: 来よう + 「と」 = even if they come → the same verb in the 辞書形: 来る + 「まいと」 = even if they don't come → then a decision that doesn't change: we keep the shop open.

    本人が納得しようとするまいと、会社の決定は変わらない。

    ほんにんがなっとくしようとするまいと、かいしゃのけっていはかわらない。

Whether the person accepts it or not, the company's decision won't change.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 納得する = to accept, be convinced → 意向形: 納得しよう + 「と」 → the same verb: する + 「まいと」 → then the conclusion 'it won't change'.

    上司がいようといまいと、彼の働き方は全く変わらない。

    じょうしがいようといまいと、かれのはたらきかたはまったくかわらない。

Whether the boss is around or not, the way he works doesn't change at all.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) いる = to be (people) → 意向形: いよう + 「と」 → it's a group 2 verb, so use the ない-form stem: い + 「まいと」 → then 'doesn't change at all'.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「雨が降ろうと___、明日の工事は予定どおり行います。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: Which form of the same verb goes before まい?
