〜ではあるまいし (~de wa arumai shi) — it's not as if ~, (so…)
'You're not a child, you know!' — the spoken form for scolding someone or talking sense into them.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Say your roommate phones his mother in Nepal about every little thing.
- You tell him: 'You're not a child — decide for yourself!'
Meaning
- 「〜ではあるまいし」= 'obviously not ~, so…'.
- It combines 「まい」(an old way of saying 'surely not') with the reason-giving 「し」, so it means much the same as 「〜ではないのだから」.
- Before it usually comes a noun that the person obviously is not: 子ども・神様・初めて・夏.
- What follows is always the speaker's opinion, advice or criticism — 〜なさい・〜ことはない・〜でしょう・〜なんておかしい.
How to attach
- N + 「ではあるまいし」
- After a verb, 「わけではあるまいし」or 「のではあるまいし」: 一生会えないわけではあるまいし
- With friends, usually the short 「じゃあるまいし」
Versus what you know
N3「〜のだから」is just a reason; 「ではあるまいし」adds a light scolding or sarcasm — 'why act like a child?'.
Watch out
It is not used for a plain fact like 'I'm not a student, so I go to the office'.
