〜とあって (~to atte) — because it is (a special case) ~
'It is a special day, so naturally this happened' — the reason form that news reports love.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Think of the TV news: 'It being the first day of the Obon holidays, the expressway has been jammed since morning.'
- It is mostly said about other people or society, in a news or written tone; rarely about yourself.
Meaning
- The reason is not ordinary — a holiday, a big sale, the day a famous singer comes, a first-ever job — a situation different from a normal day.
- What follows is the natural result: crowds, traffic jams, long queues, nerves — that is 「〜とあって」.
- It simply reports 'because it was a special situation, this happened'.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun or the plain form of a verb or adjective: 連休とあって・歌手が来るとあって
- Drop 「だ」after nouns and な-adjectives.
Versus what you know
N2「〜だけあって」(「さすがプロだけあって、うまい」) is praise, 'just as you would expect'; 「とあって」carries no praise.
Watch out
What follows is a fact that happened or is happening — never your own intention, an instruction or an invitation (〜よう・〜てください).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
お盆休みの初日とあって、高速道路は朝から渋滞している。
おぼんやすみのしょにちとあって、こうそくどうろはあさからじゅうたいしている。
It being the first day of the Obon holidays, the expressway has been jammed since morning.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) お盆休みの初日 = the first day of the Obon holidays (not an ordinary day) → it's an N, so 「とあって」 directly → then the natural result: 渋滞している = is jammed.
人気歌手が来るとあって、会場の前には朝から長い列ができた。
にんきかしゅがくるとあって、かいじょうのまえにはあさからながいれつができた。
Because a popular singer was coming, a long line formed in front of the venue from the morning.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 人気歌手が来る = a popular singer is coming (a special day) → 「とあって」 attached to the plain form → then something that has already happened: 長い列ができた = a long line formed.
初めての海外出張とあって、田中さんはかなり緊張している様子だ。
はじめてのかいがいしゅっちょうとあって、たなかさんはかなりきんちょうしているようすだ。
On a first-ever business trip abroad, Tanaka-san looks quite nervous.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 初めての海外出張 = first business trip abroad → 「とあって」 → then the state of another person (田中さん): 緊張している様子だ = looks nervous — describing someone else, not yourself.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「年末のセール___、デパートは大勢の客でにぎわった。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A special occasion → a crowd, naturally.
N + とあって = because it is a special occasion. 年末のセールとあって = it being the year-end sale (so of course it was busy). 「にあって」is a different form: 'being in such a situation'.
In which sentence is 「とあって」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is what follows a fact, or your own intention?
「とあって」is followed by a fact that naturally resulted. 「食べに行こう」is the speaker's intention or invitation — say 「給料日だから」instead.
「さすがプロ___、仕上がりがきれいだ。」— which gives the praise 'just as you'd expect'?
💡 Hint: Which form pairs with 「さすが」?
「さすが〜だけあって」= praise, as expected. 「とあって」does not praise; it only reports that a special situation led to a result.
