    〜べからず (~bekarazu) — do not ~ (a strict prohibition on signs)

A strict 'Do not!' seen only on signs, notices and old mottos.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    V辞書形 + べからず
    する → するべからず/すべからず

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • In an old temple garden or on a construction-site fence you see signs like 「芝生に入るべからず」「関係者以外立ち入るべからず」— 'Keep off the grass', 'Authorised persons only'.
    • It is used only on signs, posted notices, written rules and mottos like 「初心忘るべからず」.

    Meaning

The meaning is just 「〜するな」or 「〜してはいけない」, but in an old, written, official voice — as if the rule itself is speaking.

    How to attach

    • Dictionary form + 「べからず」: 入るべからず・捨てるべからず
    • With 「する」: 「するべからず」or 「すべからず」
    • When a noun must follow: 「〜べからざる N」: 許すべからざる行為 = an act that must never be forgiven

    Watch out

Never when telling someone 'don't' out loud — say 「食べるべからず」to a friend and it sounds like a line from an old drama; say 「食べないで」instead.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    危険につき、この先の川で泳ぐべからず。

    きけんにつき、このさきのかわでおよぐべからず。

    夜十時以降は、廊下で大声を出すべからず。

    よるじゅうじいこうは、ろうかでおおごえをだすべからず。

After 10 p.m., no loud voices in the hallway.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 夜十時以降 = after 10 p.m. (a hostel notice) → 大声を出す = to raise your voice → 「べからず」 = do not raise your voice!

    店の壁には「客を待たせるべからず」という言葉が貼ってある。

    みせのかべには「きゃくをまたせるべからず」ということばがはってある。

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 客を待たせる = to keep a customer waiting → 「べからず」 = don't keep them waiting! (the shop's motto) → 「という言葉が貼ってある」 = a phrase saying this is posted up.
