    〜まじき (~majiki) — unbecoming of ~ / that must never be done

'Something a person in that position must never do' — a form of sharp criticism in the news.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + に/として + ある + まじき + N
    Verb V辞書形 + まじき + N

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Evening news: a police officer drove drunk and caused an accident.
    • The announcer says: 「警察官にあるまじき行為だ」— 'conduct utterly unbecoming of a police officer.'
    • You hear it only in news, editorials and formal apologies.

    Meaning

    • It would be bad from anyone, but from someone who protects the law it is a far worse wrong.
    • 「〜まじき」= sharp moral criticism: 'something that must never happen given that role'.

    How to attach

    • Dictionary form + 「まじき」+ a noun: 言うまじきこと
    • Most often 「N にあるまじき N」(教師にあるまじき行為) or 「N としてあるまじき N」
    • A noun must always follow — 行為・発言・態度・こと

    Versus what you know

    • It is close to the previous 「〜べからざる」(must never be done, by anyone), but 「まじき」puts the weight on the position: 'as a teacher / doctor / leader'.
    • N3It is far stronger and stiffer than the 「〜べきではない」(shouldn't) you know from N3–N2.

    Watch out

A sentence never ends in 「あるまじきだ」.

    つかれていたとはいえ、きゃくにむかっててんいんとしていうまじきことをいってしまった。

Tired as I was, I said something to a customer that a shop clerk must never say.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 店員として = as a shop clerk (a position) → 言う = to say → 「まじき」 = must never be said → then the noun: こと → 言ってしまった = I went and said it (regret).

    飲酒運転で事故を起こすとは、警察官にあるまじきことである。

    いんしゅうんてんでじこをおこすとは、けいさつかんにあるまじきことである。
