〜て(は)いられない (~te (wa) irarenai) — can't afford to (just keep) ~ — must act now
No time left, or feelings too strong — 'I can't just stay like this; I must act now.'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Only one month left until the JLPT.
のんびりしてはいられない」— 'no more time to relax.'
Meaning
- Because there is no room in time or in your heart, 'I can't stay in this state — I must take the next step right now': that urgency is what 「〜て(は)いられない」gives.
I couldn't stay silent (anger or pity made me speak up).
- The next step often follows: 今すぐ準備しよう・〜なくては.
How to attach
- て-form + 「はいられない」; 「ていられない」without 「は」is also said
- The subject is usually 'I'.
Versus what you know
N2「遊んでばかりはいられない」(can't just keep playing) is the same form; at N1 the weight is on urgency and strong feeling.
Watch out
It is not used for rules or prohibitions — for 'you can't smoke here' say 「吸ってはいけない」, not 「吸ってはいられない」.
Only a month until the exam — I can't afford to take it easy. From today I'll review every day.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あと一か月 = only one month left (no time) → のんびりする → て-form: のんびりして → 「はいられない」 = can't sit around taking it easy → the next step: 今日から復習しよう.
Seeing a customer yelling at my junior colleague, I couldn't stay silent.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 怒鳴られている = being yelled at (I can't hold back) → 黙る = to keep quiet → て-form: 黙って → 「いられなかった」 without 「は」 = I just couldn't stay quiet.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 業績が悪化している = business is getting worse (it's urgent) → こだわる = to cling to → て-form: こだわって → 「はいられない」 = can't keep clinging to it.

— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'I couldn't just sit still' — the 'can't' form of 「いる」.
じっとしてはいられず = unable to just sit still.

💡 Hint: Your own urgency, or a rule forbidding it?
てはいられない = can't stay as you are for lack of time or calm. For a rule, say 「吸ってはいけない」.

💡 Hint: Not 'can't help watching' — 'can't afford to keep watching'.
