〜たるもの (~taru mono) — anyone who is a ~ (must…)
A very stiff, formal way to state the ideal — how anyone in a responsible role must be.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- First day at a new company, the department head gives a speech: 'Once you're a working adult, punctuality and greetings are a must.' — 「社会人たるもの…」
- He is not scolding any one person — it is the rule for anyone in that role.
- It is stiff, the voice of speeches and essays.
Meaning
- 「〜たるもの」= the lecture 'anyone in such a position must be like this'.
- What follows is a 'must' sentence — 〜べきだ・〜なければならない・〜て当然だ.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun for a responsible or honoured role (教師・医者・親・リーダー), optionally adding 「は」
- There is also an N₁ たる N₂ shape, as in 「首相たる者」, with the same meaning.
Versus what you know
- N2「〜として」(教師として) is a plain 'as a ~'.
- The previous 「ともあろう」criticises an unworthy thing someone has already done; 「たるもの」states a general ideal for everyone, with no particular incident.
Watch out
Never an event like 'what he did yesterday' after it.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
社会人たるもの、時間を守るのは当然だ。
しゃかいじんたるもの、じかんをまもるのはとうぜんだ。
For anyone who is a working adult, being on time is a given.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 社会人 = working adult (responsible to society) → attach 「たるもの」 directly = once you are such a person → then the ideal: 時間を守るのは当然だ = being on time is a given.
介護士たるもの、利用者の気持ちを第一に考えるべきだ。
かいごしたるもの、りようしゃのきもちをだいいちにかんがえるべきだ。
Anyone who is a care worker should put the feelings of the people in their care first.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 介護士 = care worker (a job that looks after other people's lives) → 「たるもの」 → then 'must': 利用者の気持ちを第一に考えるべきだ = should think first of the feelings of the people they care for.
リーダーたるもの、まず自分が手本を見せなければならない。
リーダーたるもの、まずじぶんがてほんをみせなければならない。
Anyone who is a leader must first set the example themselves.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) リーダー = leader (responsible for the team) → 「たるもの」 = once you're a leader → then 'must do': 手本を見せなければならない = must set an example.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「プロ___、どんなに体調が悪くても言い訳はしないものだ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A role + the ideal 'this is how one should be'.
N + たるもの + the ideal. プロたるもの = anyone who is a professional. ともあろう needs 人 after it; ときたら is followed by a complaint.
In which sentence is 「たるもの」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does an ideal follow, or yesterday's event?
たるもの is followed by an ideal — 'must be / must do'. 'Studied at the library yesterday' is just an event.
「___、約束の時間に遅れるなんて信じられない。」(something one person already did) — which fits?
💡 Hint: A general ideal, or criticism of one person's mistake?
〜なんて信じられない = shock at something that already happened — that is ともあろう人が territory. たるもの only takes a general 'must' ideal.
