    〜なりに (~nari ni) — in one's own way / within the limits of ~

Even though the ability or situation isn't great, one does the best one can within it — a warm, modest form.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + なりに
    Verb/い-adj V普通形/い-adj + なりに
    な-adj な-adj [だ] + なりに

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Six months in Japan. Your boss asks: 'How's your Japanese?'
    • You answer: 'Still weak, but I'm working at it every day in my own way.' — 「私なりに頑張っています」

    Meaning

    • 「〜なりに」= 'nothing grand, but my full effort within my limits'.
    • It looks at something modest — a child, a newcomer, little experience, not much money — and says there is a fitting effort even within those limits.
    • 「私なりに」sounds humble.
    • What follows is the effort, thinking or behaviour within that limit.

    How to attach

    • Straight to a noun, a plain-form verb or an い-adj
    • With a な-adj drop 「だ」: 下手なりに (× 下手だなりに)
    • Before a noun it becomes 「なりの」: 「それなりの服装」= clothes that suit the occasion
    • The repeated 「〜なら〜なりに」shape is also common: 「できないならできないなりに」

    Versus what you know

The exact opposite of the earlier 「ともなると・たるもの」: those look at high positions.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    日本語はまだ下手ですが、私なりに毎日頑張っています。

    にほんごはまだへたですが、わたしなりにまいにちがんばっています。

My Japanese is still poor, but I'm working hard at it every day in my own way.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) まだ下手ですが = still poor, but → 私 = I (N) → 「なりに」 = in my own way (humble) → then the effort: 毎日頑張っています = working hard every day.

    息子も子どもなりに、家の生活が苦しいことを分かっているようだ。

    むすこもこどもなりに、いえのせいかつがくるしいことをわかっているようだ。

My son, in his own child's way, seems to understand that things are hard for the family.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 子ども = child (understanding still limited) → 「なりに」 = even at a child's level → then understanding within that limit: 生活が苦しいことを分かっている = understands that things are hard.

    給料は少ないが、少ないなりに毎月貯金を続けている。

    きゅうりょうはすくないが、すくないなりにまいつきちょきんをつづけている。

My pay is low, but within that small amount I keep saving every month.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 少ない = little (い-adj) → 「なりに」 directly = even within that little → then an effort that fits that limit: 毎月貯金を続けている = keeps saving every month.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「あの子も子ども___、親のことを心配しているのだ。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: A child = a modest level; behaviour within it.
