Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Everyone at the office is praising the new app: 'So easy!' But to you it is just a hassle.
- You say: 'If you ask me, this app is hard to use.' — 「私に言わせれば…」
Meaning
- 「〜に言わせれば」= setting out your own clear opinion firmly, against what others say.
- It is the verdict or assessment that person would actually state — often different from the common view, and a bit blunt.
- What follows is an opinion or assessment (〜だ・〜にすぎない・〜そうだ), often after a contrasting 「みんなは〜と言うが」.
How to attach
- A noun for a person + 「に言わせれば」: 私・父・専門家・ベテランの先輩
- 「から言わせれば」is also said.
Versus what you know
- N2「〜にしてみれば・にしたら」describes how someone feels from where they stand.
- N3Don't mix it up with 「〜によると」: that is just the source of news or information.
Watch out
The noun must be a person: you cannot say 「天気予報に言わせれば」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
みんなは便利だと言うが、私に言わせれば、このアプリは使いにくい。
みんなはべんりだというが、わたしにいわせれば、このアプリはつかいにくい。
Everyone says it's handy, but if you ask me, this app is hard to use.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) みんなは便利だと言うが = everyone's opinion (the opposite one) → 私 = me → 「に言わせれば」 = if you ask me → then my clear opinion: 使いにくい = hard to use.
祖母に言わせれば、今の若者は苦労を知らないそうだ。
そぼにいわせれば、いまのわかものはくろうをしらないそうだ。
According to my grandmother, young people today don't know what hardship is.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 祖母 = grandmother (a person) → 「に言わせれば」 = if you ask her → then her harsh opinion: 若者は苦労を知らない → since it's someone else's opinion, 「そうだ」 ('she says') is added.
専門家に言わせれば、この地域でも大きな地震はいつ起きてもおかしくない。
せんもんかにいわせれば、このちいきでもおおきなじしんはいつおきてもおかしくない。
In the experts' view, a big earthquake could strike this area too at any time.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 専門家 = experts (people) → 「に言わせれば」 = in their view → then the assessment: いつ起きてもおかしくない = it wouldn't be strange if it happened at any time.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「彼は天才だと言われているが、私___、ただの努力家だ。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Your own strong opinion, against what others think.
N (person) + に言わせれば = if you ask ~. 私ときたら would be a complaint about yourself, not an opinion.
In which sentence is 「に言わせれば」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is N a person?
に言わせれば only gives a person's opinion. A weather forecast is not a person — say 「天気予報によると」.
Just passing on news: 'According to the news, train fares will go up.' — which is natural?
💡 Hint: A source of information, or a person's opinion?
Source of information = によると. に言わせれば is only for a person's own opinion or verdict.
