〜てまでも (~te made mo) — even going so far as to ~
Going as far as a big sacrifice or risk most people wouldn't take — the 'that far?!' form.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A friend in Nepal says: 'I'll buy the new iPhone even if I have to take a loan.'
- You reply: 'Do you really need to go as far as a loan?'
Meaning
- 「〜てまでも」= the 'that far?!' feeling of doing something by going as far as a big, costly or wrong means most people wouldn't use — taking a loan, staying up all night, lying, ruining your health.
- The weight is on how extreme the means is.
- So it often appears in criticism or refusal (〜てまで〜する必要はない・〜たいとは思わない), and also in praise or surprise about something already done (父は〜てまでも送ってくれた).
How to attach
- Verb て-form + 「までも」: 借金してまでも・徹夜してまでも
- Dropping 「も」, as 「〜てまで」, keeps the same meaning.
Versus what you know
N2「〜てでも」(借金してでも買いたい) is mostly the speaker's own strong will: 'I'll do it no matter what'.
Watch out
An ordinary, easy action like taking a bus or eating a meal cannot come in front — it needs a sacrifice or risk big enough to say 'that far'.
