Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Think of the phone you used in Nepal ten years ago, then look at today's smartphone.
- The gap is so big that comparing is pointless: 「昔の携帯とは比べものにならない」.
- It works in both speech and writing.
Meaning
- 「比べもの」= something fit to compare, 「にならない」= does not become — so 'not even worth comparing, a different level altogether'.
- Usually the topic with 「は」is far above, but it also works when it is far below, as in 'my Japanese is nothing next to my teacher's'.
How to attach
- N + 「とは比べものにならない」
- To say how big the gap is with an adjective: 「〜とは比べものにならないほど/くらい + adj」(比べものにならないほど高い)
Versus what you know
N3「〜に比べて」is a plain comparison — small gap or big, anything goes (先月に比べて3%増えた); 「とは比べものにならない」is only for a huge gap.
Watch out
It is not used with a small gap like 'a little' or '3%' — say 「〜に比べて」or 「〜より少し」there.
