〜っぱなしだ (~ppanashi da) — left ~ / ~ non-stop
Something left undone that should have been finished, or a bad state going on without a break — with a note of complaint.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Coming home from an eight-hour convenience-store shift you say: 「八時間立ちっぱなしで、足がパンパンだ」— standing and standing, not one minute sitting.
Meaning
- First use: 「電気をつけっぱなし」— you turned the light on, should have switched it off, but left it on.
- Second use (N1): a state going on continuously, without a break — 「立ちっぱなし」, 「負けっぱなし」(losing and losing), 「言われっぱなし」(only getting told off, no chance to answer back).
- Both uses carry a complaint: 'more than normal, this isn't right'.
How to attach
- Drop 「ます」from the ます-stem and add 「っぱなし」: 立ち + っぱなし
- In a sentence it appears as 「〜っぱなしだ」「〜っぱなしで、」「〜っぱなしの N」「〜っぱなしにする」.
Versus what you know
- N3You learned 「電気をつけっぱなし」(the first use); N1 adds the second use.
- 「〜まま」simply says a state hasn't changed, neutrally (靴をはいたまま入ってください = please come in with your shoes on); 「っぱなし」has a feeling of carelessness or 'too much'.
- The 「〜続ける」you learned earlier also means 'keep on', but it is neutral.
Watch out
- It is not used in polite instructions.
- Not with one-off events that finish at once (合格する, 着く) — only with states that can go on.

💡 Hint: A state that can go on, or a one-off event?
っぱなし is only for a state that goes on (usually a bad one). Passing an exam is a one-off, happy event.
A polite instruction to a guest: 'Please come in with your shoes on' — which is natural?
💡 Hint: A neutral 'as it is', or a careless feeling?
まま = the state is unchanged (neutral), so it fits a polite instruction. っぱなし sounds careless and complaining — you can't say it to a guest.
