    Lesson 17

Result: in the end / it came to / it won't end there

    1. 1 〜に至る ~ni itaru come to (the point of) ~ A formal, news-style way to say that things moved on step by step and finally reached a big stage or result.
    2. 2 〜に至っては ~ni itatte wa as for ~ (the most extreme case) Picks out the most extreme of several bad examples: 'and as for this one — just look at it.'
    3. 3 〜始末だ ~shimatsu da end up (in the bad state of) ~ Bad things kept happening, and in the end it came to an even more shameful state — a form of exasperation and complaint.
    4. 4 〜っぱなしだ ~ppanashi da left ~ / ~ non-stop Something left undone that should have been finished, or a bad state going on without a break — with a note of complaint.
    5. 5 〜だけではすまない ~dake de wa sumanai ~ alone won't settle it The mistake or trouble is so big that doing just that won't end it — the consequences will go further.
    6. 6 〜では済まされない ~de wa sumasarenai can't be let off with just ~ Excuses like 'I didn't know', 'a small slip' or 'a joke' won't be accepted — a strong form from the news and from reprimands.
    7. 7 〜を余儀なくされる ~o yoginaku sareru be forced to ~ Because of something beyond your control, you had to do ~ against your wishes — a formal news form.
