〜に至っては (~ni itatte wa) — as for ~ (the most extreme case)
Picks out the most extreme of several bad examples: 'and as for this one — just look at it.'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A senior at the office is complaining: 'All the new hires this year come in late. And Tanaka — don't even get me started: that's the third time this week!'
- In Japanese: 「新人はみんな遅刻が多いが、田中さんに至っては今週三回目だ」.
Meaning
- 「〜に至っては」: first you say 'they are all bad like this', then you pull out the most extreme one and show your exasperation or shock — 'this one is beyond the limit'.
- What follows says how bad that example is, and the whole sentence usually has a negative, 'this is too much' tone.
How to attach
Only after a noun: 田中さんに至っては・数学に至っては — a person, place, subject or thing
Versus what you know
- It shares the verb with the previous point, 「〜に至る」(reach a stage), but the meaning differs: here it is 'when it comes to ~', i.e. 'at the far end of the list'.
- N3「〜さえ」(even) also shows an extreme example, but it hangs on one word inside a sentence; 「に至っては」turns the extreme case into the new topic after a general statement.
Watch out
It is not used without a general statement first, or in plain instructions like 'take the bus'.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) First the general point: 新人はみんな遅刻が多い = they're all often late → 田中さん = the worst example (N) → 「に至っては」 = as for Tanaka-san, it's even worse → then the state: 今週三回目だ.

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「うちの家族はみんな朝が弱い。弟___、昼まで起きてこない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: After a noun, the form that makes it the topic: 'as for him…'.
N + に至っては. 弟に至っては = as for my brother (worst of all). 「に至って」without 「は」does not give this meaning.
In which sentence is 「に至っては」natural?
💡 Hint: A general statement first, then the most extreme example.
First 'Japanese is hard', then the hardest example, 漢字. The others have no general statement and no extreme example — just plain instructions, a request or a forecast.
Which sentence means 'the most extreme (bad) example among them'?
💡 Hint: Look for the form with 「は」.
に至っては = the most extreme example. に至るまで = a range (right up to ~); に至った = it reached that stage.
