〜に至る (~ni itaru) — come to (the point of) ~
A formal, news-style way to say that things moved on step by step and finally reached a big stage or result.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- On the news you hear: 「長い話し合いの末、両社は合併するに至った」— after long talks, the two companies finally came to merge.
- It belongs to the stiff language of news, reports and speeches.
Meaning
- 「〜に至る」= things moved forward little by little and in the end reached this big stage or result.
- It stresses the long road that led there.
How to attach
- Straight after a noun (事故に至った), or the dictionary form of a verb (合併するに至った)
- Mostly in the past, 「至った」, or before a noun, as in 「〜に至った理由・経緯」
- Related forms: 「〜に至って初めて」(only once it got that far), 「〜に至っても」(even when it got that far), 「〜に至らず」(without reaching that stage)
Versus what you know
- The 「〜ことになった」you learned earlier also says 'it turned out this way', but it is plain everyday speech.
- Don't mix it up with the earlier 「〜に至るまで」(細かい点に至るまで = right down to the small details) — that one says how far a range reaches; this one says what stage an event reached.
Watch out
It is only for big, serious or unusual stages — never for small daily things like 'I came to eat bread for breakfast'.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
長い話し合いの末、二つの会社は合併するに至った。
ながいはなしあいのすえ、ふたつのかいしゃはがっぺいするにいたった。
After long talks, the two companies eventually reached the point of merging.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 話し合いの末 = after long talks (a long road) → 合併する = to merge (dictionary form) → attach 「に至った」 = they reached that point → a stiff, news-style sentence.
小さなミスが重なって、大きな事故に至った。
ちいさなミスがかさなって、おおきなじこにいたった。
Small mistakes piled up and eventually led to a major accident.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ミスが重なって = mistakes piled up (something that grew little by little) → 大きな事故 = major accident (N) → 「に至った」 directly = it went as far as an accident.
彼が帰国を決めるに至った理由は、誰も知らない。
かれがきこくをきめるにいたったりゆうは、だれもしらない。
Nobody knows what led him to decide to go back to his country.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 帰国を決める = to decide to return home (dictionary form) → 「に至った」 = reached that decision → before a noun: 至った理由 = the reason it came to that → 誰も知らない.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「何度も話し合った結果、計画は中止する___。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'Reach the stage of ~' — which particle?
V-dictionary + に至る. 中止するに至った = it came to being cancelled.
In which sentence is 「に至る」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A big, serious stage, or a small daily matter?
に至る is only for a big or serious stage reached after a long process. Eating bread for breakfast is a small daily thing.
Which sentence means 'in the end it reached that stage' (a result)?
💡 Hint: The form with 「まで」shows a range.
に至るまで = 'right up to ~' (a range). に至った = an event reached that stage (a result): 決裂するに至った = the talks came to a breakdown.
