〜あっての (~atte no) — ~ makes (N) possible
'Without this, that wouldn't exist' — shows how essential something is, often with gratitude.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
On your first day at a convenience store the manager says: 「お客様あっての商売だからね」— 'our business only exists because of the customers.'
Meaning
- Without customers there would be no shop — to say 'B is possible only because of A' and show how important A is, often with gratitude, you use 「AあってのB」.
- A sentence like 'so let's value A' often follows.
How to attach
- Noun + 「あっての」+ noun: 「家族あっての私」「信頼あっての取引」
- At the end of a sentence 「〜あってのことだ」(it was only possible thanks to …) is also very common.
Versus what you know
N3The feeling is close to 「〜からこそ」(precisely because), but 「あっての」links two nouns directly and stresses 'without A there is no B'.
Watch out
A is something the speaker sees as essential and valuable — it is not used for a bad cause like 「台風あっての停電」; there, say 「台風のせいで」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
選手あってのチームだ。監督一人では何もできない。
せんしゅあってのチームだ。かんとくひとりではなにもできない。
A team exists only because of its players. The coach alone can do nothing.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 選手 = players (indispensable) → 「あっての」 = possible only because they exist → チーム = team (N₂) → then the reason: 監督一人では何もできない = the coach alone can do nothing.
今の私があるのは、家族の支えあってのことだ。
いまのわたしがあるのは、かぞくのささえあってのことだ。
Who I am today is only thanks to my family's support.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今の私があるのは = who I am today → 家族の支え = my family's support → 「あっての」 → 「ことだ」 = only possible because of that (gratitude).
安全あっての工事だから、急いでも確認は省かないこと。
あんぜんあってのこうじだから、いそいでもかくにんははぶかないこと。
Construction is nothing without safety, so don't skip the checks even when you're in a hurry.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 安全 = safety → 「あっての」 → 工事 = construction work (N₂) → だから = so → 確認は省かないこと = don't skip the checks (an instruction).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「信頼___取引だから、約束は必ず守ろう。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Links two nouns — 'only possible because of'.
N₁ + あっての + N₂: 信頼あっての取引 = business that exists only through trust. とあって ('because it is'), にあって ('in the situation of') and あっても ('even if there is') can't take a noun straight after.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is N₁ something valuable and essential, or a bad cause?
あっての is only for something valuable and essential. A typhoon is a bad cause — say 「台風のせいで停電した」.
Which is closest in meaning to 「お客様あっての仕事だ」?
💡 Hint: 'Only because there are customers' — 「からこそ」.
AあってのB = B is possible only because of A = Aがあるからこそ B. The other options say the opposite or something unrelated.
