〜にして (~ni shite) — only at ~ / even ~
Points to a high stage — an age, a count of years, an exceptional person — to say 'only on reaching it' or 'even someone like that'. A stiff form.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A friend from Nepal says: 「来日十年目にして、やっと日本語で夢を見た」— 'only in my tenth year in Japan did I finally dream in Japanese.'
- It is stiff, written language.
Meaning
- Main meaning of 「〜にして」: it happened only after reaching that point, after a long time and much effort — 「初めて・ようやく・やっと」usually follows.
- Second meaning, 'even someone that skilled': 「名人にして解けない問題」— even a master couldn't solve it, so naturally others can't; here it sounds like the 「すら」before.
- There are also fixed uses like 「医者にして画家」(both a doctor and a painter) and 「一瞬にして」(in an instant).
How to attach
Straight after the noun: 「四十歳にして」「三回目にして」
Versus what you know
- N3It resembles 「〜てはじめて」(only after doing), but that attaches to a verb; this one attaches to a noun.
- N3Don't confuse it with 「子どもにしては上手」(good for a child) — adding 「は」changes the meaning completely.
Watch out
The noun must show a high stage or a special condition — you cannot say 「先週にして初めて」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
祖父は七十歳にして初めて海外旅行をした。
そふはななじゅうさいにしてはじめてかいがいりょこうをした。
My grandfather went abroad for the first time only at the age of seventy.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 祖父 = grandfather → 七十歳 = seventy (a great age) → 「にして」 = only on reaching that age → 初めて海外旅行をした = went abroad for the first time.
三回目の挑戦にして、ようやく試験に合格できた。
さんかいめのちょうせんにして、ようやくしけんにごうかくできた。
Only on my third attempt did I finally pass the exam.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 三回目の挑戦 = the third attempt → 「にして」 = only when it got to that → ようやく = finally → 試験に合格できた = managed to pass the exam.
あのベテランにして解けなかった問題だ。新人には無理だろう。
あのベテランにしてとけなかったもんだいだ。しんじんにはむりだろう。
Even that veteran couldn't solve this problem. It will be impossible for a newcomer.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) あのベテラン = that veteran (a high level) → 「にして」 = even someone like that → 解けなかった = couldn't solve it → so 新人には無理 = impossible for a newcomer.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「彼女は来日五年目___、初めて一人で富士山に登った。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「初めて」follows — 'only on reaching that point'.
N + にして + 初めて = only on reaching that point. にしては means 'for a ~' (against expectations), だに only goes with mental verbs, and すら means 'even' — none of them fit with 初めて.
In which sentence is 「にして」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is the noun a high stage or special condition?
にして needs a high stage before it — a long time, an age, an exceptional person. 「先週」is just an ordinary time — 「先週初めて映画を見た」is enough.
「初めて作った___、この料理はよくできている。」— which fits?
💡 Hint: 'For a first try' — better than expected.
Vた + にしては = for a ~ (different from what you'd expect). にして doesn't attach to verbs and means 'only at'; にすら and こそあれ don't attach to verbs either.
