〜でなくてなんだろう (~de nakute nan darō) — if this isn't ~, what is? (it surely is ~)
A moved or angry rhetorical question — 'this can't be anything but ~' — in stiff, written style.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Three days after an earthquake, a child is found alive under a collapsed building. The reporter writes: 「これが奇跡でなくてなんだろう」— 'if this isn't a miracle, what is?'
- It is very stiff, written language: speeches, essays, novels; never in chat with friends.
Meaning
- Nobody needs to answer — it says 'it is surely a miracle' in the shape of a question, with strong feeling.
- That is 「〜でなくてなんだろう」: a moved heart, admiration, grief or anger.
How to attach
- Attach it straight after a noun: 愛でなくてなんだろう; 「これが」「これこそ」usually comes before.
- With 「か」on the end it becomes 「でなくてなんだろうか」.
Versus what you know
N2「〜にほかならない」(努力の結果にほかならない = it is nothing but the result of effort) also means 'nothing other than', but it is a calm, reasoning sentence; 「でなくてなんだろう」is an emotional, slightly exaggerated question.
Watch out
The key rule: the noun must also carry big feeling — 愛・奇跡・天才・運命・裏切り・無駄遣い; it doesn't fit an ordinary object, like 「これがかばんでなくてなんだろう」.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
がれきの下で三日後に子どもが見つかった。これが奇跡でなくてなんだろう。
がれきのしたでみっかごにこどもがみつかった。これがきせきでなくてなんだろう。
A child was found under the rubble three days later. If this isn't a miracle, what is?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 三日後に子どもが見つかった = a child was found three days later (the event) → これが = this → 奇跡 = miracle → 「でなくてなんだろう」 = if not a miracle, what else? → it surely is a miracle.
十年間、毎月家族に送金を続けた。これこそ愛でなくてなんだろう。
じゅうねんかん、まいつきかぞくにそうきんをつづけた。これこそあいでなくてなんだろう。
Ten years of sending money to the family every month. If this isn't love, what is?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 毎月家族に送金を続けた = kept sending money to the family every month → これこそ = this very thing → 愛 = love → 「でなくてなんだろう」 = if not love, what else? → it surely is love (deeply moved).
客の個人情報を勝手に売るとは、裏切りでなくてなんだろうか。
きゃくのこじんじょうほうをかってにうるとは、うらぎりでなくてなんだろうか。
Selling customers' personal data without permission — if that isn't betrayal, what is?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 個人情報を勝手に売る = to sell personal data without permission → 裏切り = betrayal → 「でなくてなんだろうか」 (with 「か」 at the end) = if not betrayal, what else? → it surely is betrayal (anger).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「危険をおそれず人を助けた。彼の行動こそ、勇気__なんだろう。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: N + で + なくて + なんだろう.
N + でなくてなんだろう. 勇気でなくてなんだろう = if this isn't courage, what is? — it surely is courage.
In which sentence is 「でなくてなんだろう」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Does the noun carry big feeling, or is it an ordinary object?
でなくてなんだろう only goes with nouns carrying big feeling, like 愛・運命・天職・差別. 'If this bag isn't a bag, what is it?' has no feeling and sounds odd.
「十年も彼女を待ち続けた。これが愛__。」— as the moved question 'if this isn't love, what is?'
💡 Hint: 'It surely is ~' in the shape of a question.
愛でなくてなんだろう = an emotional question. 「にほかならない」is close in meaning but a calm statement, not a question; 「にすぎない」= merely (makes it small), and 「でなくてもいい」= it needn't be love.
