Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You phone the city office: 'I'll come tomorrow to pick up the papers.' The clerk says: 「郵送いたしますので、わざわざお越しいただくには及びません」— 'we will post them, there's no need to come all the way here.'
- It is very formal, usually in the form 「〜には及びません」.
Meaning
That is 「〜には及ばない」: formal, polite language for 'there's no need to do that, please don't trouble yourself'.
How to attach
Attach it to the dictionary form of a verb (行くには及ばない), or drop 「する」from a する-noun (心配には及ばない).
Versus what you know
- Earlier you learned 「先輩には及ばない」= 'I don't reach my senior's level' — there a person or level (N) comes before it; here an action comes before it (a verb, or an action noun like 「心配」), and the meaning is 'no need to'. Look at what comes before to tell them apart.
- 「までもない」in this lesson also means 'no need', but it gives the reason 'it's obvious'; 「には及ばない」is mostly said to free someone from their offer or worry — 「ご心配には及びません」(no need to worry), 「それには及びません」(no need for that, thank you).
Watch out
The key rule: what comes before must be an action done on purpose — it doesn't fit things that just happen, like 「お腹が空くには及ばない」.
