〜ほどのことではない (~hodo no koto de wa nai) — not serious enough to ~ / not worth ~

The matter is small — taking that big a step would be too much. Works in speech and writing.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    V辞書形 + ほどのことではない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • You have a slight fever in the morning. You wonder whether to take the day off, but the thermometer says only 37.2. You tell yourself: 「仕事を休むほどのことではない」— 'it's not serious enough to take the day off.'
    • It is also the easiest of the three — it works with friends and in office mail alike.

    Meaning

「ほど」= 'to the extent', 「こと」= 'matter'; so this form measures the size of the matter: it is small, and doing ~ would be too much.

    How to attach

    • Attach it to the dictionary form of a verb: 休むほどのことではない
    • The polite form is 「ほどのことではありません」, and with the feeling of 'even' it becomes 「ほどのことでもない」.

    Versus what you know

    • Compared with the other 'no need' forms in this lesson: 「までもない」says 'it's obvious, that action isn't needed'
    • 「には当たらない」says a feeling or judgement like surprise or blame is too much
    • 「ほどのことではない」says 'the matter itself isn't that big'.

    Watch out

The key rule: because of 「こと」, the topic must be a matter, problem or event (この程度の熱・そのミス); you can't use it about a person, as in 「彼は信用するほどのことではない」— there, say 「信用するほどの人ではない」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    少し熱があるだけで、仕事を休むほどのことではない。

    すこしねつがあるだけで、しごとをやすむほどのことではない。

I only have a slight fever; it's not serious enough to take the day off work.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 少し熱があるだけ = only a slight fever (a small matter) → 仕事を休む = to take time off work → 「ほどのことではない」 = not serious enough to need that.

    箱に小さな傷があるだけなので、交換してもらうほどのことではありません。

    はこにちいさなきずがあるだけなので、こうかんしてもらうほどのことではありません。

There's only a small scratch on the box, so it's not worth asking for an exchange.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 小さな傷があるだけ = only a small scratch (a small matter) → 交換してもらう = to have it exchanged → 「ほどのことではありません」 (polite) = no need to go that far.

    道を一本間違えただけだよ。そんなに落ち込むほどのことではないよ。

    みちをいっぽんまちがえただけだよ。そんなにおちこむほどのことではないよ。

You only took one wrong street. It's nothing to get so down about.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 道を一本間違えただけ = just one wrong street (a small matter) → 落ち込む = to feel down → 「ほどのことではない」 + 「よ」 = no need to be so down (talking to a friend).
