The formal 「てもいい」— the language of permission at offices, hospitals and companies.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
An email arrives about your job interview. The last line says: 「当日は私服でお越しいただいても差し支えありません」— 'you may come in casual clothes on the day.'
Meaning
「差し支え」= hindrance, problem; so 「差し支えない」= no problem at all.
How to attach
- Attach 「も」to the て-form of a verb (来ても・遅れても), use 「くても」with い-adjectives (小さくても), and in the negative 「〜なくても差し支えない」= 'it's fine not to' (書かなくても差し支えない).
- With nouns and な-adjectives it becomes 「でも」: 「明日でも差し支えありません」.
- You usually hear the polite 「差し支えありません」.
- From it comes 「差し支えなければ」(if it's no trouble for you), which opens a polite request: 「差し支えなければ、ご連絡先を教えていただけますか」.
Versus what you know
N3The meaning is the same as N5 「〜てもいい」and N3 「〜てもかまわない」— 'it's fine to' — but this is the version in a suit: office papers, a doctor at the hospital, notices from the city office.
Watch out
The key rule: it is formal language — say 「このジュース、飲んでも差し支えない?」to a friend and it sounds strange; there, 「飲んでもいい?」is right.
