〜までだ (~made da) — (I'll) just ~ / I merely ~
A calm resolve — 'if there's no other way, I'll just ~' — and a modest reply — 'I only did ~'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
You worked late and the last train is about to leave. Your friend panics, but you calmly say: 「間に合わなければ、歩いて帰るまでだ」— 'if I don't make it, I'll just walk home.'
Meaning
- That is the first meaning of 「〜までだ」: if there's no other way, I'll do that, no big deal — a mind already made up, without fear.
- The second meaning: when someone thanks you warmly, 「当然のことをしたまでです」— 'I only did what I should; there's nothing more to it.'
- It is the modest way of making your own act small, or of explaining 'I meant nothing else by it'.
How to attach
- First meaning: dictionary form (帰るまでだ), usually after a condition like 「〜なら」「〜ば」; it isn't used for things already over.
- Second meaning: the Vた form (当然のことをしたまでです).
- The longer 「までのことだ」is used with the same meanings.
Versus what you know
- N3「〜しかない」also means 'no other way', but it carries a giving-up tone, 'what can I do, I'm forced to'; 「までだ」has the courage of 'fine, I'll do it'.
- Don't confuse it with the previous 「までもない」: that is 'no need to do', this is 'I'll just do / I only did'.
Watch out
The key rule: it is about the speaker's own action and decision — it doesn't fit things that just happen, like 雨が降るまでだ.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
終電に間に合わなければ、歩いて帰るまでだ。
しゅうでんにまにあわなければ、あるいてかえるまでだ。
If I miss the last train, I'll just walk home.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 終電に間に合わなければ = if I miss the last train (a condition) → 歩いて帰る = to walk home (dictionary form) → 「までだ」 = I'll just do that; it's no big deal.
今回だめなら、十二月にもう一度受けるまでだ。
こんかいだめなら、じゅうにがつにもういちどうけるまでだ。
If it doesn't work out this time, I'll just take it again in December.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 今回だめなら = if it doesn't work out this time → もう一度受ける = to take the exam again → 「までだ」 = no fear, I'll just do that (my mind is made up).
お礼なんていりません。当然のことをしたまでです。
おれいなんていりません。とうぜんのことをしたまでです。
There's no need to thank me. I only did what anyone should.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 当然のこと = the natural thing → した = did (Vた) → 「までです」 = I only did it; it's nothing special (a humble reply).
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「お礼なんて、とんでもない。昨日、財布を交番に__までです。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 「昨日」— the act is already done.
To make your own past act sound small: Vた + までだ. 届けたまでです = I only handed it in to the police box.
In which sentence is 「までだ」unnatural?
💡 Hint: The speaker's own decision, or the weather?
までだ is about the speaker's own action and decision. Snow falling is nobody's decision, so it doesn't fit.
「バスがもうないなら、タクシーで帰る__。」— meaning 'if there's no other way, I'll just do that'?
💡 Hint: Not 'no need to', but 'I'll just do it'.
帰るまでだ = I'll just take a taxi home. 「までもない」means 'no need to' — that clashes with 'if there's no bus'; 「ばそれまでだ」only follows the ば-form; 「には当たらない」only goes with verbs of feeling or judging.
