〜とみると (~to miru to) — the moment (someone) judges that ~

Someone sizes up the situation — and instantly changes course.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb・い-adj V普通形/い-adj + とみると
    な-adj・N な-adj/N + (だ) + とみると

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • You're watching a football match. The other team realises our players are tired and attacks all at once.
    • In Japanese: 「相手チームは、こちらが疲れているとみると、一気に攻めてきた」.
    • It is mostly used for someone else's clever or selfish moves — they push forward when they see a gain and run when they see a loss.

    Meaning

    • Here 「みる」doesn't just mean looking with your eyes; it means 'to size up, to judge'.
    • The moment a person concludes 'so that's the situation', they switch their behaviour at once.

    How to attach

    • Plain form (普通形) + 「と」+ 「みると」: 疲れているとみると・安いとみると
    • After a noun or な-adjective, 「だ」can be kept or dropped (不利(だ)とみると)
    • In news and writing you also meet the stiffer 「〜とみるや」— same meaning.

    Versus what you know

The other forms in this lesson come after an event (a door opened, someone got home); 「とみると」comes after a judgement made in someone's head.

    Watch out

What follows is a quick move that already happened or is a habit — not a request or the speaker's own plan.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    相手チームは、こちらが疲れているとみると、一気に攻めてきた。

    あいてチームは、こちらがつかれているとみると、いっきにせめてきた。

The moment the other team judged that we were tired, they attacked all at once.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 疲れている = is tired (plain form) → attach 「とみると」 (the judgment 'so that's how it is') → then the tactic changes at once: 一気に攻めてきた (attacked all at once).

    彼は、話が長くなりそうだとみると、急に用事を思い出す。

    かれは、はなしがながくなりそうだとみると、きゅうにようじをおもいだす。

Whenever he senses a conversation is going to drag on, he suddenly 'remembers' an errand.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 長くなりそうだ = looks like it will get long → attach 「とみると」 → then a habitual move (present form): 急に用事を思い出す (suddenly remembers an errand) — a clever excuse.

    投資家たちは、円が下がるとみると、一斉にドルを買い始めた。

    とうしかたちは、えんがさがるとみると、いっせいにドルをかいはじめた。

The moment investors judged that the yen would fall, they all started buying dollars.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 円が下がる = the yen will fall (a forecast) → attach 「とみると」 → then what they did right away: 一斉にドルを買い始めた (all started buying dollars at once) — news style.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「相手が初心者_とみると、彼は急に強気になる。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: What is the plain form after a noun?
