〜てからというもの (~te kara to iu mono) — ever since ~ (a lasting change)

Something happened, life changed — and it has stayed that way ever since.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Vて + からというもの

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Say you came from Nepal to Japan and started working at a company. After that your life changed — you phoned home less, began cooking for yourself, and it is still that way now.
    • When you tell your own story, it gives the feeling 'that event changed my life'.

    Meaning

    • 「〜てからというもの」gives the feeling 'after that event everything changed, and it has stayed that way'.
    • What follows is always the changed state that has lasted ever since: 〜ようになった・〜なくなった・〜ばかりだ・〜ない日はない.

    How to attach

    • Verb て-form + 「からというもの」(来てからというもの・生まれてからというもの)
    • You may also add 「は」: 「からというものは」.

    Versus what you know

N2「〜て以来」(「日本に来て以来」) is close in meaning, but 「て以来」just states the fact; 「てからというもの」stresses how big the change was.

    Watch out

    • A one-time action (× 一度旅行した) cannot follow.
    • It is not used for the very recent past either — 「昨日引っ越してからというもの」sounds wrong.

    にほんではたらきはじめてからというもの、かぞくとはなすじかんがめっきりへった。

    子どもが生まれてからというもの、夫は毎日早く帰ってくるようになった。

    こどもがうまれてからというもの、おっとはまいにちはやくかえってくるようになった。

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 生まれる = to be born → て-form: 生まれて → 「からというもの」 → then 〜ようになった — a new habit that is still going on now.

    祖母は足を痛めてからというもの、ほとんど外に出なくなった。

    そぼはあしをいためてからというもの、ほとんどそとにでなくなった。

Ever since she hurt her leg, my grandmother has hardly gone out.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 足を痛める = to hurt one's leg → て-form: 痛めて → 「からというもの」 → then 〜なくなった — she used to go out, now she doesn't, and it has stayed that way until now.
