〜というもの (~to iu mono) — for the whole of (this period)
'For this whole stretch of time…' — talking about a period that felt long.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In the month before the JLPT you studied until 2 a.m. every night — no meeting friends, no going out.
- Looking back you say: 「この1か月というもの、毎晩2時まで勉強した」— 'this whole month long…'.
Meaning
- 「〜というもの」gives the length of a period plus the feeling of how long it felt.
- It carries your own tiredness, worry or effort.
- What follows is a state that went on the whole time: 〜ている・〜ていない・〜ばかり・一度も〜ない.
How to attach
- 「この/ここ」+ period + 「というもの」— no particle in between: この3日間・ここ半年・この1年
- 「というものは」is also heard.
Versus what you know
- In the previous point, 「〜てからというもの」, an event (Vて) came first — 'ever since that happened'; here no event comes first, just a length of time.
- N2「〜にわたって」also means 'over the whole period', but that is neutral news language (3日間にわたって会議が行われた).
Watch out
A one-time event (× この1か月というもの、一回映画を見た) cannot follow.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
この1週間というもの、雨ばかりで洗濯物がちっとも乾かない。
この1しゅうかんというもの、あめばかりでせんたくぶつがちっともかわかない。
This whole week it has done nothing but rain, and the laundry won't dry at all.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) この1週間 = this one week (a period) → attach 「というもの」 directly: 'the whole week' → then a state that lasted the entire time: 雨ばかり・乾かない.
ここ半年というもの、残業続きで休日はほとんど寝て過ごした。
ここはんとしというもの、ざんぎょうつづきできゅうじつはほとんどねてすごした。
For the past six months it has been nonstop overtime, so I've spent my days off mostly sleeping.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ここ半年 = the past six months → 「というもの」 → then how things were for that whole time: 残業続き (nonstop overtime) → 寝て過ごした.
この10日間というもの、母から一度も連絡がない。
このとおかかんというもの、ははからいちどもれんらくがない。
For ten whole days now, I haven't heard from my mother even once.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) この10日間 = these ten days → 「というもの」 → then 一度も連絡がない — the worry 'such a long time!'
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「この3日間__、ほとんど何も食べていない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Does anything go between the period and というもの?
Right after the period (この3日間) comes 「というもの」with nothing in between. 「からというもの」only follows an event in Vて.
In which sentence is 「というもの」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A state through the whole period, or a one-time event?
というもの needs a state lasting the whole period; 'watched a film once' is a one-time event.
Which sentence is correct?
💡 Hint: A period and an event take different forms.
Period + というもの → この1年というもの. For an event (入社) use Vて + からというもの → 入社してからというもの.
