    〜に値する (~ni atai suru) — deserves ~ / worth ~

'Deserves praise', 'worth a read' — a stiff, written way of saying something has real value.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N N + に値する
    Verb V辞書形 + に値する

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • When someone saves a neighbour's child from a fire, the news says: 「彼の勇気ある行動は称賛に値する」— 'his brave act deserves praise.'
    • This is also stiff, written language: news, reviews, letters of recommendation. With a friend, 「見る価値あるよ」is enough.

    Meaning

「値(あたい)」means 'value', so 「〜に値する」= 'it has that much value; it deserves ~'.

    How to attach

    • To attach it, add 「に」straight to a noun (注目に値する・一読に値する); with a verb, use the dictionary form (信じるに値する).
    • The negative 「〜に値しない」is perfectly natural too: 「検討に値しない」= not even worth considering.

    Versus what you know

    • It looks like the previous point 「に足る」, but there is a difference: 「に足る」says 'it meets the bar' (enough to trust) and usually needs a noun after it
    • 「に値する」puts the weight on the thing's 'value', and it sits comfortably at the end of a sentence (称賛に値する。).

    Watch out

Careful: 「値しない」means 'not worth', not 'cannot' — for 'my eyes are bad so I can't read it' you need 「読めない」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    災害の現場で一晩中働いた消防士たちの努力は、称賛に値する。

    さいがいのげんばでひとばんじゅうはたらいたしょうぼうしたちのどりょくは、しょうさんにあたいする。

The efforts of the firefighters who worked all night at the disaster site deserve praise.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 消防士たちの努力 = the firefighters' efforts → 称賛 = praise (a noun) → attach 「に値する」 = worthy of praise → the sentence ends here.

    この本は日本で働く外国人にとって、一読に値する一冊だ。

    このほんはにほんではたらくがいこくじんにとって、いちどくにあたいするいっさつだ。

For foreigners working in Japan, this book is well worth a read.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一読 = one reading (a noun) → 「に値する」 = worth reading → then the noun: 一冊 (one book).

    根拠のないうわさ話など、本気で相手にするに値しない。

    こんきょのないうわさばなしなど、ほんきであいてにするにあたいしない。

Baseless gossip isn't worth taking seriously.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 根拠のないうわさ話 = baseless rumors → 相手にする = to pay attention to (dictionary form) → 「に値しない」 = not worth it (negative form).

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「彼の三年間の研究は、高く評価する___。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: 'Worthy of ~' — which particle?
