〜にもほどがある (~ni mo hodo ga aru) — there's a limit to ~ / that's going too far
Angry criticism when someone's behaviour crosses the line — 'there's a limit to this!'
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- If a friend turns up two hours late and laughs instead of apologising, you snap: 「非常識にもほどがある!」— 'there's a limit to how inconsiderate you can be!'
- It leans spoken and emotional; say it straight to a superior and it will start a fight.
Meaning
「ほど」= a limit, so 「〜にもほどがある」= 'even ~ has its limit, and you crossed it' — sharp criticism and anger at someone's behaviour or words.
How to attach
- To attach it, add it straight to nouns and な-adjectives (冗談にもほどがある・わがままにもほどがある), and to the plain form of い-adjectives and verbs (ひどいにもほどがある・人をばかにするにもほどがある).
- Usually 「〜なんて」or 「〜とは」comes before it to show what made you angry.
Versus what you know
The previous point 「といったらない」also means 'extremely', but that is amazement at a degree and works for good things too (美しさといったらない); 「にもほどがある」is always negative — blame for 'going too far, past what anyone can accept'.
Watch out
Don't use it to thank or praise — 「助けてくれてありがとう。親切にもほどがある」makes no sense.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
約束の時間に二時間も遅れて来るなんて、非常識にもほどがある。
やくそくのじかんににじかんもおくれてくるなんて、ひじょうしきにもほどがある。
Showing up two hours late — there's a limit to how inconsiderate you can be.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 二時間も遅れて来るなんて = coming two whole hours late (something infuriating) → 非常識 = rude, thoughtless (な-adj, attached directly) → 「にもほどがある」 = even this has a limit.

やちんをいちどにさんまんえんもあげるとは、ひどいにもほどがある。
Raising the rent by 30,000 yen in one go — that's going way too far.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 家賃を三万円も上げる = to raise the rent by 30,000 yen → 「とは」 = something like this! → ひどい = awful (い-adj) → 「にもほどがある」 = it's gone past the limit.
「来月で会社がなくなる」なんて、冗談にもほどがあるよ。
「らいげつでかいしゃがなくなる」なんて、じょうだんにもほどがあるよ。
"The company closes next month"? Even a joke has its limits!
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 「来月で会社がなくなる」なんて = saying 'the company will close' → 冗談 = joke (a noun, attached directly) → 「にもほどがある」 = even a joke has its limits → 「よ」 makes the anger stronger.

「人のスマホを勝手に見るなんて、失礼___。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 'A limit even to ~' — 「に」+「も」.
な-adjective + にもほどがある. 失礼にもほどがある = there's a limit to rudeness.
In which sentence is 「にもほどがある」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Gratitude, or anger?
にもほどがある is always anger and blame. When thanking someone, say something like 「本当に親切ですね」.
「祖母が編んでくれたセーターの温かさ___。本当にうれしい。」— which fits?
💡 Hint: Joy and praise — not criticism.
温かさといったらない = the warmth is beyond words (works for good things too). 「にもほどがある」is only criticism, 「に堪えない」is for things too awful to see or hear, 「に値しない」= not worth it.
