〜といったらない (~to ittara nai) — so ~ it's beyond words
Cold, beauty, tiredness — so extreme that words fall short; a spoken form full of surprise.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Arriving in Hokkaido for the first time in January, you tell a friend on the phone: 「寒さといったらないよ!」— 'the cold is beyond words!'
- It is spoken language; don't use it in formal writing or documents.
Meaning
- 「〜といったらない」means 'however I try to say how ~ it is, words fall short' — an extreme degree mixed with surprise.
- It works for good things (美しさ) and bad things (つらい) alike.
How to attach
- To attach it, add it straight to an い-adjective (つらいといったらない), to a な-adjective or noun without 「だ」(失礼といったらない), and very often turn the adjective into a noun with 「さ」(寒さ・美しさ・長さ).
- For the past, 「〜といったらなかった」.
- You will also hear the short 「〜ったらない」or, in complaints, 「〜といったらありゃしない」.
Versus what you know
- N2Don't confuse it with the 「〜といったら」(京都といったらお寺 = speaking of ~): that just raises a topic; here 「ない」follows and the meaning is 'extremely'.
- N2「〜てたまらない」states your own unbearable feeling; 「といったらない」instead sounds amazed at how far something goes.
Watch out
It is a form of degree — it does not take a plan or intention verb like 「明日六時に起きるといったらない」.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 長い = long → 長さ = length → 「といったらない」 = there's no limit to it → 「よ」 (said to a friend) → then the proof: meetings run an hour over.
夜勤明けに満員電車で立ちっぱなしなんて、つらいといったらない。
やきんあけにまんいんでんしゃでたちっぱなしなんて、つらいといったらない。

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 夜勤明け = after the night shift ends → 立ちっぱなし = standing the whole way → つらい = hard (い-adj, attached directly) → 「といったらない」 = so hard you can't put it into words.
