    〜かぎりだ (~kagiri da) — I feel extremely ~

Your own feeling — joy, loneliness, regret — at its strongest, said in a calm, grown-up way.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    い-adj い-adj + 限りだ
    な-adj な-adj + な + 限りだ

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • Think back to your first month in Japan: no friends, no language, alone in your room at night — what you feel then is, in Japanese, 「心細い限りだ」: 'I feel utterly alone and helpless.'
    • It works in speech and writing; at the office you often hear 「うらやましい限りです」.

    Meaning

「〜かぎりだ」(限りだ) shows that the speaker's own feeling has reached its peak — the same meaning as 「とても〜」, but in a calmer, more grown-up voice.

    How to attach

To attach it, an い-adjective goes as it is (うれしい限りだ); a な-adjective keeps its 「な」(残念な限りだ).

    Versus what you know

    • N2The 「〜てたまらない」you learned is also a strong feeling, but it is one that boils up from inside and can't be held back (it even works for heat or hunger); 「限りだ」is like stepping back and stating your feeling quietly.
    • N2Don't confuse it with the 「〜限り」('as long as', 体が動く限り) either — that one attaches to a verb or noun and sits in the middle of the sentence; this one attaches to a feeling adjective and ends the sentence with 「だ/です」.

    Watch out

The key rule: only words for feelings — うれしい・寂しい・心細い・うらやましい・残念. You cannot describe a thing's quality, like 「この部屋は広い限りだ」, and it is your own feeling, not someone else's.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    ネパールの母から、元気だという手紙が届いて、うれしい限りだ。

    ネパールのははから、げんきだというてがみがとどいて、うれしいかぎりだ。

A letter came from my mother in Nepal saying she is well — I couldn't be happier.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 手紙が届いて = a letter arrived (the reason) → うれしい = happy (my own feeling, い-adj as it is) → attach 「限りだ」 = I feel extremely happy.

    日本に来たばかりで知り合いが一人もいないのは、心細い限りです。

    にほんにきたばかりでしりあいがひとりもいないのは、こころぼそいかぎりです。

I've only just come to Japan and don't know a single person — I feel terribly helpless.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 知り合いが一人もいない = don't know a single person → 心細い = helpless, lonely (い-adj) → 「限りです」 = I feel that very strongly (polite form).

    楽しみにしていた花火大会が雨で中止とは、残念な限りだ。

    たのしみにしていたはなびたいかいがあめでちゅうしとは、ざんねんなかぎりだ。

The fireworks festival I'd been looking forward to was canceled because of rain — what a terrible shame.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 中止とは = that it was canceled (surprise and sadness) → 残念 = disappointing (な-adj) → put 「な」: 残念な → 「限りだ」 = extremely disappointing.
