    〜極まりない (~kiwamarinai) — utterly ~ / ~ in the extreme

A stiff, written way to criticise someone's behaviour or a situation as 'beyond all limits'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    な-adj な-adj + 極まりない
    な-adj な-adj + な + こと + 極まりない
    い-adj い-adj + こと + 極まりない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • After a minister's strange remark, the news commentary says: 「無責任極まりない発言だ」— 'an utterly irresponsible remark.'
    • It is mostly used for bad (minus) things, and it is very stiff, written language — news, articles, letters of complaint. With a friend, 「本当に失礼だよね」is enough.

    Meaning

「極まる」means 'to reach the extreme', and 「極まりない」= 'there is no limit to it' — in other words, extremely.

    How to attach

    • To attach it, kanji な-adjectives like 失礼・危険・不愉快・無責任 take it directly (危険極まりない) or with 「なこと」(不便なこと極まりない)
    • An い-adjective must take 「こと」(わかりにくいこと極まりない) — you cannot say 「危ない極まりない」.
    • There is also the form 「失礼極まる」with the same meaning, but 「極まりない」is used more.

    Versus what you know

The difference from the previous 「〜かぎりだ」: that one is your own feeling (うれしい・寂しい); this one is your harsh judgement of someone's behaviour or a situation.

    Watch out

Careful: don't see 「ない」and think 'not' — 「失礼極まりない」means 'extremely rude', not 'not rude'!

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    約束の時間に一時間も遅れて謝りもしないとは、失礼極まりない。

    やくそくのじかんにいちじかんもおくれてあやまりもしないとは、しつれいきわまりない。

Arriving a full hour late and not even apologizing — that is rude in the extreme.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 一時間も遅れて = a full hour late → 謝りもしない = not even apologizing → 失礼 = rude (な-adj, attached directly) → 「極まりない」 = extremely rude.

    雨の夜に、スマホを見ながら自転車に乗るのは危険極まりない。

    あめのよるに、スマホをみながらじてんしゃにのるのはきけんきわまりない。

Riding a bicycle while looking at your phone on a rainy night is extremely dangerous.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) スマホを見ながら自転車に乗る = riding a bicycle while looking at your phone → 危険 = dangerous (な-adj, attached directly) → 「極まりない」 = extremely dangerous.

    この書類の説明は、専門用語ばかりでわかりにくいこと極まりない。

    このしょるいのせつめいは、せんもんようごばかりでわかりにくいこときわまりない。

The explanation on this form is nothing but technical terms — it could hardly be harder to understand.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 専門用語ばかり = nothing but technical terms → わかりにくい = hard to understand (い-adj) → 「こと」 is required → 「極まりない」 = extremely hard to understand.
