〜ことこの上ない (~koto kono ue nai) — nothing could be more ~
'There is nothing above this' — a formal way to say something good or bad is at its peak.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Say the nearest station is closed for construction and the bus comes only once an hour: 「通勤が不便なことこの上ない」— 'commuting could not be more inconvenient.'
- It is very formal, written language; in everyday talk, 「すごく〜」is fine.
Meaning
「この上」= 'above this', 「ない」= 'there is none' — so 「〜ことこの上ない」literally means 'there is nothing more ~ than this'.
How to attach
- To attach it, a な-adjective keeps its 「な」(不便なことこの上ない) and an い-adjective goes as it is (美しいことこの上ない); it does not attach to verbs — you cannot say 「雨が降ることこの上ない」.
- You will also often hear 「この上ない」placed straight before a noun, as in 「この上ない喜びです」(there is no greater joy), in speeches and business letters.
Versus what you know
The meaning is close to the previous 「極まりない」, but here is the difference: 極まりない is mostly for bad things and criticising someone, while this one easily takes good (plus) things too — 「美しいことこの上ない」(beautiful beyond compare) is fine.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
最寄りの駅が工事で使えず、通勤が不便なことこの上ない。
もよりのえきがこうじでつかえず、つうきんがふべんなことこのうえない。
The nearest station can't be used because of construction — commuting could not be more inconvenient.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 駅が使えず = the station can't be used (the reason) → 不便 = inconvenient (な-adj) → put 「な」 → 「ことこの上ない」 = it couldn't be more inconvenient.
雪をかぶった朝の富士山は、美しいことこの上ない。
ゆきをかぶったあさのふじさんは、うつくしいことこのうえない。
Mount Fuji in the morning, capped with snow — nothing could be more beautiful.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 雪をかぶった富士山 = snow-capped Mt. Fuji → 美しい = beautiful (い-adj as it is) → 「ことこの上ない」 = couldn't be more beautiful (it works for positive things too).
新しい職場の先輩方は皆親切で、心強いことこの上ない。
あたらしいしょくばのせんぱいがたはみなしんせつで、こころづよいことこのうえない。
The seniors at my new workplace are all kind — I couldn't feel more reassured.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 先輩方は皆親切で = the seniors are all kind (the reason) → 心強い = reassuring (い-adj) → 「ことこの上ない」 = I couldn't feel more reassured.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「この辺りは夜になると真っ暗で、物騒な__この上ない。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The whole form: 〜○○この上ない.
な-adj + な + ことこの上ない. 物騒なことこの上ない = it could not be less safe.
Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: An adjective, or a verb?
ことこの上ない only attaches to adjectives; 「降る」is a verb. For 'it rained every day', say 「雨が降り続いた」.
A ceremony speech: 「このような賞をいただき、___喜びです。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The form that sits right before a noun and also works for joy.
この上ない喜び = no greater joy — a set phrase for speeches. 極まりない is mostly for criticism; 「極みの」「至りの」don't stand before a noun like this.
